What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

My sister and I are looking for a book that we read sometime around 1990 that was a collection of stories and each story had a moral or lesson to it. The one particular story in the book that we can both remember is about a little girl who meets another child with no shoes so the little girl gives the other child her shoes. The story continues with the little girl meeting other children who need various articles of clothing and she continues giving away her clothing until she has none left. We can’t completely remember, but we believe that at the end of the story, the little girl who gave away all of her clothing went to heaven.
We would really love to share this collection of stories with our children, if only we can find it!

I'm not familiar with that particular story, but I remember reading a lot of books by Arthur S. Maxwell around that time. His "Bedtime Stories" books were collections of stories that each had a lesson or moral. It sounds like something that might be in one of his books.

So it could be in a collection with other Grimm tales, or with stories from other sources entirely - I'm sorry that I haven't helped to narrow it down much!

Olivia, can you describe the illustrations - realistic/cartoony/cute, simple/detailed, painted watercolors/bold graphics, bright/dark/muted colors/black & white?
