In chapter 3, Gogol talks about a time when a substitute teacher pauses when coming to his name during roll call and displays hesitation in saying anything. Perhaps from fear of mispronouncing it? Or was it ignorance?
I know this scenario all too well, as I'm sure many of you who've grown up here can also relate. How did you typically react? Was it annoying? Perhaps a bit funny? Or did you stand strong and stay silent, forcing the teacher to have to make an attempt? I think before I even had a chance to truly react, my classmates would always turn and stare at me, chime in on my behalf, or some combination of the two.
