Hello! This is Kendra E. Ardnek, author of the Bookania Quests. I'm glad to have you here, so stop by and introduce yourselves.

I'm a nineteen-year-old homeschooled writer who, after Christ, has two obsessions, Nutcrackers and Fairy Tales.
My favorite fairy tale changes from day to day, but right now I'll go with "Casperl and the Princess", since it's on my mind right now.

What's your favorite fairy tale?

deborah o'carroll (deborahocarroll) | 9 comments Hi! I'm not sure I should technically be here since I've not finished reading "Sew, It's a Quest" yet. XD But I'm enjoying it for the most part thus far and hope to finish it after the craziness of NaNo season is over. :P And I love fandom groups. So here I am. ^_^

I'm Deborah, I'm nineteen as well (yay!) and was homeschooled (double-yay!) and am also a writer (yay the third!). I mostly write fantasy sooo... yeah. :)

My favorite fairy tale is "The Twelve Dancing Princesses". <3 It's just fabulous and I have this goal of reading all the retellings of it that I can get my hands on. :D

I probably won't be very active on here till I've done some more reading but this is my reminder to myself to come back after I have! :)

I don't think I've read Casperl and the Princess... I shall have to check it out!

Good to have you Deborah! Don't worry about not being done yet. We're still glad to have you here!

I love the Twelve Dancing Princesses, too, and I'm thoroughly looking forward to when they work into Bookania ... though it will be a while, unfortunately.

Casperl is a very obscure fairy tale that can only be found in two or three books (depending on whether or not you count my Bookanias) and on my blog. It's very sweet, though.

Abbey Stellingwerff | 14 comments I'm Abbey and I'm 18 and finishing my senior year. My favorite fairy tale is The Fisherman and His Wife. I'm not sure why... I've just always liked it, I suppose.

Welcome Robyn and Abbey! I'm glad to have you here!

I believe you can already guess my plans for Rapunzel, since I give some pretty good hints in the first book. I'm looking forward to actually introducing her, though, since she's a very fun character.

And I have some brilliant plans for Fisherman and His Wife. As in, it will have its own book. It will be more of a sequel to the fairy tale, but still. I will answer the unanswered questions! (and I'll leave it to your imagination which questions those are).

Abbey Stellingwerff | 14 comments I can't wait!

message 7: by Jenelle (new)

Jenelle | 7 comments Aloha (nope, I'm not from Hawaii, I just like to mix it up a bit). I'm Jenelle, I'm 33, oldest of 4, mom of 3, I was homeschooled and am currently homeschooling! And right now, I'm feeling a bit old.

However, like Peter Pan, I refuse to grow UP, despite growing older.

My favorite fairy tale... hmmm, I've always loved the one about the princess and the golden apple, but I can never remember the title of it. I also like the 12 Dancing Princesses, the Princess on the Glass Hill, and The Snow Queen. I have a book of fairy tales that has a bunch of the more obscure ones, and I enjoy them. I like fairy tales a lot.

There are lots of fairy tales that involve a princess and a golden apple ... are you talking about the one where she's the unloved (step-)daughter, and the golden apple tree will only let her pluck its fruit, a passing king decides to make her his bride? (I know at least two versions of this tale, one of which is rather ... weird.)

I have 12 Dancing Princesses and The Snow Queen planned out - books 19 and 7 - and I think you'll like what I'm doing with them. My inclusion of TSQ will be quite different from the Disney version. And despite the fact that The Princess on the Glass hill is one of my favorite stories (and partial inspiration for the ending of CinderEddy), I have not determined how exactly it works into Bookania. I will, however, direct you to Cinderellis and the Glass Hill, which is a well done rendition of it.

(Speaking of Peter Pan, that's going into the sci-fi series that my sister and I are working on together.)

message 9: by Morgan (new)

Morgan | 21 comments I guess I haven't introduced myself yet, even though I've been technically part of this group for awhile. I'm Morgan. I'm the oldest of three girls, a homeschool graduate, and an author. Oh, and one half of the accidentally wandering threads off topic team. :P

I'm not sure what my favorite fairy tale is. I'm most familiar with Disney versions, which I know can be wildly off from the originals. I like Frozen (a lot), but I've only skimmed through The Snow Queen. I have always been strangely fond of Rumplestiltskin, though.

message 10: by Kendra (new)

Kendra Ardnek | 102 comments Mod
Ooh ... Rumplestilskin. Back when I was first planning the series, and it was going to be a series of standalone sequels to the various fairy tales, the individual volumes having very little to do with each other, I knew exactly what I planned to do with that fairy tale - indeed, it was the best plotted, and was going to be the second book of the series.

As I stand right now, I'm not exactly sure what I'm doing with it now, though I'd like to incorporate that plot. Maybe it'll be a spin-off like CinderEddy and Tears, Frogs and Laughter. Not technically part of the series, but still part of the over arching world.

Yes! I'm pretty sure that's the golden apple story. It was in a book of fairy tales my mom grew up with.

I have read Cinderellis and the Glass Hill! It's fantastic. I really enjoy her reimagined fairy tales.

I was introduced to the "One Eyes, Two Eyes, and Three Eyes" version in a play that a friend of mine was in, and then I found it in a coloring book that my Grandmother owned. Quite an interesting story. The other version I know was in the same fairy tale collection in which I found Casperl and the Princess. I can't remember its title off the top of my head, but since you didn't bring up the sisters having odd numbers of eyes, I'm going to say this second version is the one you're familiar with. (It's also the version I'll probably include in Bookania. As much as I love the former ... it's a bit weirder than I like to work with.)

message 13: by deborah (new)

deborah o'carroll (deborahocarroll) | 9 comments Cinderellis and the Glass Hill is FABULOUS!! :D

Also @Morgan: Have you read The Rumpelstiltskin Problem? It's a collection of six different retellings and it's awesome. XD

message 14: by Morgan (new)

Morgan | 21 comments No, I haven't. I think I've just read a picture book we have that also has a thing in the back that tells about the differences between multiple versions. And there's the Once Upon a Time version. Now there are some fairy tale retellings.

I wish I could watch the full episodes of OUaT, but for now, I've been watching the clips that people post on YouTube. Very interesting show, and I'm thoroughly convinced that the Enchanted Forest is a page of Bookania, somewhere. (All that talk of the Author, the fairy tales, little hints like that.)

I think I'm going to start a new thread for alternative reading and watching ...

message 16: by Abbey (new)

Abbey Stellingwerff | 14 comments (Ooooo... OUAT is a brilliant show! *scrambles off to find the alternative reading/watching thread*)

message 17: by Erudessa (new)

Erudessa Aranduriel | 29 comments Hey all! My name is Erudessa Aranduriel, but you can call me Dessa. I am obsessed with fairytales.....like literally obsessed! I'm the 6th child of 12, homeschooled, a country girl and auntie to two adorable little stinkers. I live in the great western mountains and please don't try to take me away from them!!

I've been reading Bookania since 2012 and I love these books! I must confess that I prefer Bookania to Rizkaland.

Welcome, Dessa!

I miss the mountains...

So, what fairy tale are you most looking forward to seeing me include in Bookania?

Ummmmm.....well, since you aren't doing Beauty and the Beast, probably Cinderella due to my speculations on that storyline.

Do you have a list somewhere of all the fairytales you plant o include? I'd love to see East of the Moon, West of the Sun (and I don't remember if you've ever mentioned whether or not you're including it).

EotM,WotS is one of my favorites, though I've still as yet to figure out what I'm doing with it.

I will have you know that I will have B&B eventually, and I think I've finally figured out exactly how I want to work it in.

I've never sat down and written an actual list, though I suppose that I should. I do have these blog posts:

http://knittedbygodsplan.blogspot.com...
http://dollsbooksthingsthatmatter.blo...

Those are some old posts, though, and I have changed a few of my ideas since then. Such as some changes to B&B and I now have an idea of how Alladin will work in.

message 21: by Erudessa (new)

Erudessa Aranduriel | 29 comments Okay.

Yes!!!! I always hoped you would include it!

This shall be interesting to watch....although I still kinda wish you were this magic storytelling machine that could just spit out 3 books per year. :D

Yes, we need to find those cloning facilities. There has to be a secret base of cloners from Kamino SOMEWHERE.

In case anyone doesn't, I'm Sarah Taleweaver, my favorite fairy tale is probably a tie between Rapunzel, The 12 Dancing Princesses, and King Thrushbeard, and I recently fell in love with the Bookania Quests thanks to the Sew rewrite.

Hey Sarah! Well, I'd seen you around Kendra's group, but I first 'met you' when I followed your blog from the Five Magic Spindles contest. I liked the sound of your entry, so I followed your blog to keep an eye on it.

Oh, cool! Sorry that I haven't really done anything with it so far, haha. Eventually I want to get it published somehow; I just haven't figured out how yet.
