What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

All I have is a quote that keeps running around in my head "Holding down my corner of the world". I know it is a YA book, written in the last 10-15 years. The main character is getting advice or help from an older person. I thought it was The Giver but it isn't. Running themes include:

-looking at your life
-becoming responsible and not running away from things
-avoiding suicide (?)

Oh and the cover is kind of a brown backdrop with a watercolor-y sort of picture on the front.

That is really all I can recall.

Is it something like My corner of the universe by Ann m Martin???
