I agree with Beena, Laura! Definitely worth forging ahead. :)
It's definitely action packed this one.

Well, shame. I'll read it eventually... but I'm sad that it's not great. Have you read his Book of the Ancestor series? Lots of people loved it but I disliked it somewhat severly... i loved Jorg so much!! Why couldn't lightning strike twice? 😁

I just finished it last night and I agree with you Siobhan that it was alright but it wasn't amazing. The middle part was by far the best bit for me. It's a shame he built up Snorri venturing into hell so much in the last book and it turned out to be pretty dull.

(view spoiler)[ It went downhill for me pretty quick after Jal left Vermillion to travel to Osheim, even the bits while they were travelling weren't enough to grip me, though finding out Taproot was a builder was interesting.

I'm glad the ending was at least good though. I can't believe the thing that made Jal make up his mind with the key was Snorri. I struggled to really believe that he'd truly want to be a "god"... by my understanding I thought he'd end up like Aslaug and Baraquel, which doesn't sound great.

I also can't believe he ended up a Cardinal lol, seems like a very un-Jal-like thing to do! (hide spoiler)]

Oh really? His Book of Ancestor series is on my to-read list, I'm intrigued to see what he does with a female protagonist..

I loved Jorg too!! I loved his intelligence, wit and ruthlessness! I was telling Siobhan that Broken Empire is one of the best series I've read hands -down!

I totally agree with you on Broken Empire being one of the best ever series! Jorg's psychopathic nature was so well done I became an insta-adorer of Lawrence. Unfortunately I've been less enthused with his other stuff.

I hope you like Book of the Ancestor more than I did. I wanted a female Jorg, but you don't always get what you want... 🎵🎶🎵🎶

Same, it made me an instant fan of Lawrence too! Shame this wasn't on the same level. I guess like you said, it's a rarity to see that level of brilliance across an author's entire body of work.

I hope I like it too! I hope it's better than this series, I think the best thing about it was the humour. And although I liked Jal, he blanked on the fights a lot or was running away or let Snorri do the work and part of the thrill is being in the midst of the action with the main character driving it.

Beena, if you're into fight scenes and want to try different genres, defo check out The Last Kingdom. The Whale Road too, which is also a huge adventure.

I'm a sucker for Viking stories and ass-kicking...

I found the Taproot twist really interesting too, probably the best bit towards the end. Agreed it went downhill when they were travelling again. I loved the middle with the big battles against the dead. (hide spoiler)]

Thanks! Will definitely give them a go at some point, but I've had my fill of Vikings for the moment lol
