Ariana might have been the Obscurial and thats the reason nobody saw her and she could not attend school. Aberforth gives some interesting details in 7th part while discussing his relationship with his brother and his sister along with Grindelwald. Aberforth hinted she died at an early age because she could not control her magic and it turned inward and drove her mad.
