Agree!!Anything with yucky stuff in it... I don't understand why I would want more negativity in my escape reading.
For me, I'm not a fan of romance. Legal thrillers & military thrillers aren't my cup of tea either. I have to be really in the mood for them.
My least favorite are serial killer stories, followed by horror and family sagas. For my book challenge in 2020, I'll have to read a family saga and I'm already dreading it. I guess I'll try combining it with my favorite genre (space opera) to balance out the good with the bad (I'll read Blue Remembered Earth).
I am so sick of 900 book series. I love writers who can end a story. it seems to be a truly dying art form. I love a happy ending so why drag me through so much to get it? the obvious exception are writers like Tim Dorsey Erle Stanley Gardner and Agatha Christie who deliver a happy ending at the end of each book.
Over the years I spent a lot of time reading reviews by highly listed reviewers. I have learned a few techniques, like bottom line first, and parental warnings. However it depresses me to see reviewers with page after page of bodice ripper/ romance titles.
I dislike both fantasy and science fiction and believe me I’ve tried reading both of them wit no luck.

this is posted every where. I wont read it because i feel the poster is not showing groups respect. It annoying

My least favorite is dystopian science fiction reads. I am not a huge fan of western but every once in awhile I will find one that reels me in.
My NOPE genre isSlasher fiction, Sadism, Body horror, Splatterpunk and alike
This is something I will NEVER read, and if I happen to start reading something unbeknownst, I'll DNF it as soon as I realize what I'm reading.
"Memoirs" of people who are famous for being famous. I like memoirs of people I appreciate, admire, love, care for, who mean something to me, but the "famous from tv" "celebrities"... No.
More "common" genres I don't read: Westerns. War stories. Sports fiction.
I LOVE SciFi and Fantasy :-D
I dunno. I dont really have this problem. most genres have gifted writers telling stories and that's what I'm here for. I dont like a whole lot of death in my stories but so many genres rely heavily on it. A bit too much in some cases especially mysteries and crime stories. I mean you cant read a story about a rival bakeries without stumbling over corpses before you get to the mixer! I mean sabotage, blackmail, betrayal, general mayhem, extortion only come to light after bodies start piling up. And here's my problem, I cant think of a worst event than finding a dead body. (especially if I've ever spent quality time with the person whose life is over violently) But apparently this life altering experience is supposed to unlock some inner Nancy Drew and I'm supposed to bypass the police (every fricking time) and actively search for someone who I know has killed. WHAT! Unfrickinglikely. I really love mysteries tho.
Graphic violence or gore (not every horror novel goes there, so I hate to dismiss an entire genre), bodice-rippers/romance, too many detailed sex scenes (in any genre).I think, in general, it's not a particular genre I don't care for, but heavy-handed R or X-ratedness of any particular book. My soul cringes away from that type of content.
Anything I guess you'd call 'social realist' or proper, important books about Meaningful Themes, all of them nearly always about the twee and boring anxieties of middle class people operating in the real world. Pretty much everything in the Man Brooker Prize seems to go into this category. They're nearly all boring, and hideous to read. Romance, chic lit stuff, just pap. No interest.Give me space aliens, zombies, historical fiction, cowboys and wizards any day. Modern day realist fiction is boring.
I am not a fan of non-fiction, generally. I do not care for romance or westerns.I have a fondness for apocalyptic fiction, classics, literature, poetry, historical fiction, sci-fi, short stories... I read across a wide variety of genres. My list of favorite authors includes: Truman Capote, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Harry Crews, Joyce Carol Oates, Jose Saramago, Stephen King, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Tennesee Williams, and many more...
I am not a fan of romance novels. I remember my Mom lying on the couch and reading romance novels for hours on end... I love post-apocalyptic novels as I enjoy the creative ways of survival after TEOTWAWKI (the end of the world as we know it...). I enjoy classics, modern literature, horror, sci-fi... even poetry. Let's face it... I am a reading fool - smile. As an avid reader all my life, I read across a wide variety of genres.
I used to hate horror and thrillers, but since I've read Perfect Day I slowly began to like it.I think my least favourite genre now is romance. When I was fourteen in used to read Colleen Hoover only, for a whole summer, but I guess this was a bit too much because I haven't really read romance ever since.

I came here to say the exact same things, except my gateway to horror & thriller was They Never Learn. I started it solely based on its specific academia setting, being the english department, where the heroine was said to be a professor. I like reading pedantic shit as an english grad so I expected to enjoy those pretentious references while reading fiction. But the book turned out to be waaaay more driven by action. It was a fun read though. I'd also add fantasy to the genres I don't like.
