Goodness, I don't think I could pick one! But some of my favorites are The Shining The Haunting of Hill House Hell House and The Dwelling

I loved The Haunting of Hill House too, but here's a great short story, THE YELLOW WALLPAPER by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.
Gilman's story is a classic, Gmaharriet, but a disappointing film despite having Juliette Landau in the lead.
House of Leaves and the Shining are my favorites. The Haunting of Hill House is a good read as well. However, some of the dialog is a little confusing for a modern reader.
Here are some good ones not mentioned so far:
Julia Peter Straub
House of Small Shadows Adam Nevill
Long Lankin Lindsey Barraclough
The House Next Door Anne Rivers Siddons
Coldheart Canyon Clive Barker
Usher's Passing Robert McCammon
The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer: My Life at Rose RedJoyce Reardon
Burnt Offerings Robert Marasco
The Woman in Black Susan Hill
The Witching Hour Anne Rice
The Turn of the Screw Henry James
Florence and Giles / The Turn of the Screw John HardingEven though "Witching Hour" is technically about a dynasty of witches, the house on First Street in the New Orleans Garden District is one of the best literary haunted houses.
For fun, read Turn of the Screw and Florence And Giles simultaneously or back to back.

I agree with the haunting of hill house. I love, love, love anne rice so naturally I love the mayfair witch series.
The Shining and The Haunting of Hill House. A friend recently recommended
and plan to pick it up soon. Just added The Good Houseby Tananarive Due, thank you Maresa, it looks very good :)
Listening to 77 Shadow Street by Dean Koontz on audio. I must admit that I'm having a little trouble following it but it does seem to fall in the Haunted House genre :-).
I used to love D.K.'s books, but the past few years and books he's written are really not good enough for me to bother with, so I dropped him.

I agree Carrie, it does look like a good book. I already had it in my TR pile. If anyone has read it, please let us know if you liked it.
