Monica (moniraq) | 1 comments The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson is the scariest haunted house story ever!

Mike I read Naomi's Room lately, enjoyable take on the topic.

message 10: by Gmaharriet (new)

Gmaharriet I loved The Haunting of Hill House too, but here's a great short story, THE YELLOW WALLPAPER by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.

message 11: by Annie A (new)

Annie A | 25 comments Gilman's story is a classic, Gmaharriet, but a disappointing film despite having Juliette Landau in the lead.

message 12: by Karl (new)

Karl Meszaros | 1 comments House of Leaves and the Shining are my favorites. The Haunting of Hill House is a good read as well. However, some of the dialog is a little confusing for a modern reader.

Holly (goldikova) Here are some good ones not mentioned so far:

Julia by Peter Straub Julia Peter Straub

House of Small Shadows by Adam Nevill House of Small Shadows Adam Nevill

Long Lankin by Lindsey Barraclough Long Lankin Lindsey Barraclough

The House Next Door by Anne Rivers Siddons The House Next Door Anne Rivers Siddons

Coldheart Canyon by Clive Barker Coldheart Canyon Clive Barker

Usher's Passing by Robert McCammon Usher's Passing Robert McCammon

The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer My Life at Rose Red by Joyce Reardon The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer: My Life at Rose RedJoyce Reardon

Burnt Offerings by Robert Marasco Burnt Offerings Robert Marasco

The Woman in Black by Susan Hill The Woman in Black Susan Hill

The Witching Hour (Lives of the Mayfair Witches, #1) by Anne Rice The Witching Hour Anne Rice

The Turn of the Screw by Henry James The Turn of the Screw Henry James

Florence and Giles / The Turn of the Screw by John Harding Florence and Giles / The Turn of the Screw John Harding

Even though "Witching Hour" is technically about a dynasty of witches, the house on First Street in the New Orleans Garden District is one of the best literary haunted houses.

For fun, read Turn of the Screw and Florence And Giles simultaneously or back to back.

Carrie The Shining and The Haunting of Hill House. A friend recently recommended The Third Floor by C. Dennis Moore and plan to pick it up soon. Just added The Good House
by Tananarive Due, thank you Maresa, it looks very good :)

message 17: by Latasha (new)

Latasha (latasha513) I'm listening to the good house right now. I'm not too far in but so far it's ok.

message 18: by Laura (new)

Laura Iverson (zenbreeze) Listening to 77 Shadow Street by Dean Koontz on audio. I must admit that I'm having a little trouble following it but it does seem to fall in the Haunted House genre :-).

message 19: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (littlemissred3) | 804 comments I used to love D.K.'s books, but the past few years and books he's written are really not good enough for me to bother with, so I dropped him.
