I don't remember the father at all, so he was probably absent or just very unrememberable. I think the cover had a lot of green on it, like grass and a tree, but I might be thinking of a different book. The book that Olive is searching for sounds interesting, but the similarities stop at a dead little brother. My book didn't have any ghosts, and the sister doesn't realize that anything is wrong until the end of the book. She doesn't realize that other people don't see her brother. I don't think the brother was a ghost, but was imagined to be alive. Thank you for asking about my book. I really appreciate the help.
I think that's it! I'll read it to double-check, but when I looked it up just now, the brother was named Frog, and it looks very familiar. Thank you all for helping me!

Yes, it's Dear Hank Williams. I mixed a few things up about it, such as that it was the aunt who sold makeup, not the main character's mother. Thank you all for finding the book!

Random Things I remember:
There was a radio show that the mother really liked where the radio show host would give a washer to the family who had the most horrible thing happen to them. The winner was a family whose house had burnt down, and had lost everything but their lives.
The mother had a new makeup she was trying to sell. There might have been an incentive for whoever sold the most. She would try to sell it by bringing it up in conversation whenever she could. The makeup was for lighter skin, so she didn't try to sell it to an african-american woman, but I think she tried to sell a different tone of makeup.
The african-american woman was either a co-worker and friend, or helped with laundry. When she came over to the main characters house (either to talk to the mother, or do laundry) she would sometimes bring her daughter over, who was the same age as the main character.
There was an elderly lady who lived on the street with the main characters house. The elderly lady would visit the cemetery which I think was across the street. I think the elderly lady either had a dead husband in the graveyard, or a son who died in a war. She'd ask the main character to come to graveyard with her, but the main character would refuse in a way that came off to me as rudely.
For some reason, I think the little brother had a nickname along the lines of toad, frog, or turtle, but I've tried searching the internet for that, and haven't come up with anything.
Huge Twist. SPOILERS ahead.
The little brother was actually dead. The main character was just imagining that he was still alive. She remembered he had died, when near the end of the book she agreed to go to the graveyard with the elderly lady. She saw her brothers tombstone with his name and his nickname in parentheses, and it all came rushing back to her. I think he died because he was hit by a car. The elderly lady kept asking if the main character wanted to go to the graveyard with her, because the elderly lady knew that the main characters brother was buried their. The main character had never attended her brothers funeral. Any help finding this book would be greatly appreciated. I only remember it because of the twist.
