Dawn Michelle | 3496 comments My goal this year is 100 200 [thank you Covid Pandemic].
I have 12 months of BIG BOOKS planned and with NetGalley [NG] books and book club book and Read Around the World books, I should make that [and probably more, though I am limiting my NG books to 6 a month, and so far, I am sticking to that], but I am ABSOLUTELY not reading for numbers this year. I realized in about October of this year [2019] that I was not enjoying reading anymore, nor was I retaining a whole lot because I had so many books going and had no down time in between, especially when I had book hangover, so 2020 is less about the numbers and more about reading what I own and reading for enjoyment. My challenges are listed below.

I have only ever read The Painted Veil [which I did AFTER seeing the excellent movie] and I love his writing style, so I am really looking forward to this book.
The Hunt for Red October is the only book I am nervous about - I ADORE that movie and know it inside and out and I am really nervous about the book. So here's hoping. I know that most everyone that had read it has said its very good.

May I recommend the Audible [only] version of Dracula? Featuring Tim Curry, Alan Cumming and Simon Vance [amongst others], it is not a dramatization, but a straight read by each character. It. Is. AMAZING. I had read Dracula before and loved it [even while shuddering in fright LOL] and this was even better. It truly brings the story to life and boy-howdy that cast is amazing.

I have never read it, but I do remember watching the miniseries with my aunt when it was on [she let me watch the most INAPPROPRIATE things LOL - I was only 13 and I doubt I understood most of it. She also let me watch "Madame Butterfly" when I was 11 and even as I sat bawling on the couch with her, I KNOW I had no real idea why] and have been intrigued by it ever since. If you are interested, I'd be willing to do a buddy read in March with you - mind you, I will be taking the whole month to tackle it. Just so you are aware. :-)

I think so many of us were forced to read classic when we were young. It makes adults that are still afraid of reading them. I think audio books are helping to make these books more understandable and enjoyable for people in general. The movie adaptations help too :)

I think you are correct Andrea - I know that that was the case for me in regards to Jane Austen. It wasn't until I had watched several of the movies a bazillion times that I started to feel that they were more accessible and then I happened on two amazing narrators for two of them [Persuasion and Pride and Prejudice - I read read Sense and Sensibility I think and that was my least favorite so far of the books, though I ADORE the Emma Thompson version of the movie] and I fell in love with Austen and her writing.
I have always loved Dickens [I read Great Expectations for fun the summer I was 15] but just never seemed to find the time to squeeze another one in. Now I have two this year! YAY!!

For me it was the Great Gatsby, I read it for summer reading and fell in love. It was the first time that I felt I could truly understand a more challenging "adult" book. It was one of the moment where a became a lifelong reader.

I had read quite a few "adult" books before I read "Great Expectations" that really amped up my love of reading, but it was GE that totally made me realize just what a huge world of books where out there. I think I *knew* but hadn't really experienced it until then. IDK. I read a lot of stuff fairly young, but that was mostly because I was just trying to read everything I could get my hands on and no one was paying attention to what I was reading.
I never read Gatsby until I was an adult. Crazy right?

I think a big part of it is that many of us are required to read those classics before we have the right knowledge base to appreciate them. For example, I read Oliver Twist in middle school and hated it (booooooring!). Then when I read it again after college, after I had acquired the proper historical background, it became one of my favorites. It's like I read two entirely different books. I'm finding that same experience with a lot of the classics I read in school.

Dawn Michelle | 3496 comments Stacie wrote: "Andrea wrote: "I think so many of us were forced to read classic when we were young. It makes adults that are still afraid of reading them. I think audio books are helping to make these books more ..."

I am one of those rare weirdos that loved classics right out of the gate - I remember reading Beowulf when I was 15 and just loving everything about it. And I think I was the only one in my class that adored [and did well] with Hamlet and Macbeth. I am not sure why this is, but I have read and loved a lot more classics than most of my friends. The ones that I am reading this year are really the ones that I have been afraid of [of the classics, though I am afraid of The Hunt for Red October since I adore that movie] and never really set apart time to delve into them. I know they won't all be as awesome as A Tale of Two Cities, but I can hope right? ;-)

I think that it is awesome Stacie that you are willing to revisit those books you disliked in school as an adult. That takes a lot of book courage IMO - not everyone is willing to do that to see if they may have been wrong about a book in reading it when they were unprepared.

I love the narrator. The jury is still out with the story though. I DO have book hangover though and that makes reading anything right now just meh.

I had to get into it but it flowed so well that by halfway through I was hooked.

Dawn Michelle | 3496 comments I am heading into three weekends in a row with my littles so WHO knows just how much reading I will get done while they are here - I usually just collapse into a comatose state once they are in bed. LOL And this week they are here from Thursday until Monday [GOD GRANT ME STRENGTH!] so its all a crap shoot at this point.
