Angela, while I am not a first-time publisher (5 books published with a sixth coming out in Jan. 2015), I'm an avid reader of self-published novels. I have also worked as an editor, beta read numerous authors, and have the scars from self-publishing and promoting. I hope you have room in your group for those willing to extend friendly, constructive advice to those going through the learning curve.

Always and welcome! I started this group "2015 Debut Authors", but honestly (and I can not say this loudly enough) everyone is welcome to put their books on the shelves! Please do so :)

OOOH! A poetry section! Thank you! I'll create it right away and you can put the book on the shelf! Welcome to the Group :)
I, too, am not a first-time writer, with four novels and a collection of short stories to my credit so far, so have also earned my battle scars from the leap into self-publishing. lol. I hope I can learn from others, and perhaps pass on a little advice learned from experience. I do hope to have the first volume of an epic fantasy published sometime in 2015. And look forward to being a part of this new group!
Welcome, Abigail! Thank you for shelving your books! Make yourself at home *passes Abigail a hot chocolate and Andes candy*
Happy New Year all!Angela, I joined because you said you liked books with words and I laughed out loud. (I'm thinking of a couple of bestsellers I read recently. Where are the words?)

Welcome, Nadine and Happy New Year!
LOL... I have three children and they LOVE books, but it was a challenge graduating them to chapter books (Thank you, Rowling!) I sat them all down in a circle and read Harry Potter chapter 1 out loud. THEN STOPPED. Yes, it was cruel, but my oldest picked up HP that night and the children have been reading since.
A few months ago, my youngest (now 7) found my Tolkien, The Hobbit, and flipped through it. She asked, "Where are all the pictures?" I had to explain that "Grown up books don't have pictures. Only words." She didn't like hearing that. "The pictures are in my head," I said. Hence my "books with words". *grin*
That I read most genres.

When I first decided to publish a book back in 2010 I didn't research my work and decided to go with the first company I found. I came across Publish America, for those who don't know, they are one of the worst companies out there. I had countless problems and issues with them and there was always bickering back and forth including them questioning my professional credibility when they at the time were a lot more credible then I. I wiped my hands clean with them for a year and half not and my first book has since been fixed up.Advice: Do not settle for the first company you see. Look into several companies and break down their pro's and con's, if something seems suspicious move on and look elsewhere. Take the self-publishing route at first if you'd like, I didn't know about it until it was too late. Being a good author is getting your work published by people who care about you and not just themselves.
Ace advice, Justin :)If anyone's at the process of vetting small presses/publishing companies, check out

Great resource based on feedback given by clients (usually ex-clients :D)
I recently published first novel. Currently working on second one after a bit more understanding of the whole process and desire to make my work better. Not that the first was bad, but I now know ways it could have debuted better.
