Post here! You must post by midnight on the Friday in which your response is due.

do all 5 in one box if you have enough characters (the character count is under the box and tells you how many more things you can type in the box)

What about 9/14- 9/18? I couldn't do that since you sorta skipped a whole week and I was confused whether or not to do it in 9/7-9/11 or not... Can we do it in here as well as 9/19-10/3?

Edit: Oh wait. I see that it was 9/7- 9/18... Did you change it? 'Cause I remember it said 9/11 before... If it didn't, I haven't noticed it till now... What do I do about my 9/14-9/18 Reader Response? Do I not get a grade for it since I didn't know where to put it until it was too late?

"Thirteen reasons why" By: Jay Asher
9-13-09
Cassette 5: Side B

Describe a part that surprised you...

It really surprised me that what Clay did was good but hurt Hannah at the same time. It surprised me that the story got so horribly real or scary. It surprised me that Hannah would be so contradictory and not help someone that needed it so badly (like her). It surprised me that the author could really know what really could go wrong in teens lives.

9-14-09
Cassette 6: Side A

Tell about what happened in the story...

One of Clay's friends,Tony, tells him how he had a part in Hannah's life and is not on the tapes. They discuss how they knew the signs that Hannah were giving were of suicide. They discuss how they could have helped her and about the "what if"'s. Tony tells Clay how Hannah gave him the second set of tapes and how she used his equipment to record the tapes and how he had no idea what she was doing until it was too late.

9-15-09
Cassette 6: Side B

Describe your feelings about characters...

Right about now I absolutely HATE Bryce Walker. He is a very sick and disgusting person for doing what he did to Hannah. I don't dislike Courtney Crimson as much as dislike Bryce but she isn't much better. She knew what was going to happen when she left Hannah and Bryce alone in that hot tub but she still left. That is what makes her so horrible.

9-16-09
Cassette 7: Side A

Make a prediction about what will happen next...

Obviously talking with Mr. Porter isn't going to work because Hannah still committed suicide. I just can't see how Hannah wants people to read her mind. I think Mr.Porter is going to talk to Hannah and she is going to just give up just like she did with Clay. Cause she acts like she wants help but then she just gives up on herself and that is exactly what I predict is going to happen.

9-17-09
Cassette 7: Side B/The next day after mailing the tapes

Describe your feelings about the events...

Clay has finished the last of the tapes and while going to first period goes to talk to a girl. That is the end of the book. I don't get why Hannah said "Thank you" at the end of the last tape. I don't get what Clay was feeling at the end of this book. Over all the ending was confusing. I feel the events surly changed Clay for the better.

Tell what happened in the story...

A family of two: Lila and Grady Flood, are sick and tired of their current home. So they leave on their rundown car and then break down in the middle of nowhere. They walk and find a little town that consists of a gas station, restaurant, and a barn. The two get a job by taking care of an old man named Charlie. They soon learn that he likes to be alone with his martins, small purple birds. No matter how cut off Charlie tries to be with Lila and Grady, they eventually warm up to each other.

pg. 231/231
09/15/09

Describe your feelings about the events...

When Grady were releasing the sparrows Charlie had captured, he had no idea what he was doing. The reason why Charlie captured them was to protect his martins. Sparrows kill their eggs and the martins themselves. Grady thought he was doing good, and plus the sparrows looked so innocent and cute. When Charlie found out what happened and his favorite martin died, Marie, from a sparrow, the trio's bond was severed. It couldn't get any worse, but when winter came, the martins would freeze and starve to death if Grady, Lila, and Charlie didn't do something quick. All anger lost, they saved the martins together.

Copy down a quote from a character and tell why you think it's meaningful...

"Welcome back. And thanks for hanging out for part two." -Hannah Baker

I think this quote is meaningful because it shows that Hannah is still being herself even when she's still planning about suicide. She's talking through the cassette to Clay as if in person. Hannah still shows her personality through the cassettes. She also talks about why she died by not talking about how she died. She's very calm about it.

pg. 173/288
09/17/09

Write a letter to the author or a character...

Dear Mr.Asher,

In your book, it says that you were inspired in writing this book by taking an audio tour in an art museum. You said that a lady told you exactly what you were seeing but wasn't really there. How did you plan this book, based on the audio tour? Was it difficult planning, or did you make it up as you were going along and revising it later? Was there a point where you just couldn't write and wanted to give up on it? Or were you inspired all the way? Being an author seems like fun. Is it? These are a few questions that were in my head while I was reading your book. Keep on writing Mr.Asher!

Your faithful reader,
Ashley Y.

pg. 288/288
09/18/09

Tell how you would react if you were one of the characters in the story...

If I was Clay while listening to Hannah explaining why Clay is on the list, I would of been frozen in disbelief. At first, I would of thought it was also my fault, but I think I would eventually learn that it wasn't. I would of sent the tapes to the next person, because I think sending it would fulfill Hannah's last wish before she died. I would understand a bit more why, and learn to accept it and move on, like Clay has.

Leven Thumps And The Whispered Secrets

Pages 1-117

9/21/09

Tell about what happened in the book.

Leven, Winter, Geth, and Clover have finally made it into Foo. They destroyed the gateway so that no being can come into Foo or leave Foo when ever they feel. But when someone enters Foo a strange force goes over Foo giving bits of information about evreything there is in the Foo and in Reality.

This wave continues to wear off but the protecters of the turrets who know all continue to hear them. Altho it lasted long enough to tell evrey one that Leven had destroyed the gateway and that he cheated fate so he is vulnerable to death by murder. Now people are out to get him.

9/22/09

Describe your feelings about the events.

When Geth was chopped up at the toothpick factory they split his heart just right so that all of the bad parts in his heart where chopped into a different tooth pick. I feel confused because his other side is out to kill him but knows the gateway is destroyed. I have no clue what he is going to do.

9/23/09

Make a prediction about what will happen next.

I think that Geth will find his way to the Turrets. He will be restored to his powerful form and then will end the war of darkness and light over Foo.

9/24/09

Describe a part that described you.

I was surprised when they where able to trap Winter the way they did. Winter's powers are very powerful and they captured her like she was a small animal. She should have ben able to stop them.

9/25/09

Describe your feelings about a character
(Only one new one was introduced)

Ertha is Geths dark side, i feel that Ertha is going to pose a extreme problem with Geth. He know has a human to take him where ever he is going to have to go. If he finds a way into Foo before Geth is restored he will kill him.

1984 By George Orwell
pg 26/298
09/21/09

Tell what happens in the story...

The story so far is about a man named Winston Smith who works for the Ministry of Truth, which concerned itself with news, education, fine arts, and entertainment. He lives in London and the time period is around the year is 1984. But it is nothing like London back in 1984. There are microphones and cameras almost everywhere; nothing was private, not even your own thoughts. This was all supposedly under the command of a man named Big Brother. Something was always of shortage, like chocolate or razor blades, but the news are saying things like how better London is now than 50 years ago. The language is even different. They now use Newspeak (basically the people of London killed the unnecassary words from Oldspeak and use Newspeak.) So a word like great is now "doublegood" or excellent which would be "doubleplusgood". The character Winston is beginning to show that he is wanting to rebell against the leadership of Big Brother, but doesn't do anything because he is alone in his opinion.

pg. 45/298
09/22/09

Describe your feelings about the events...

Winston's job is to rewrite things that contridicts to what the government has said. Like if a newspaper says that the chocolate rations will increase and the next day there is an announcement that chocolate rations will decrease, Winston's job is to rewrite the artical saying that chocolate rations are decreased. Anyway, Winston has to fix an artical saying that in Times magazine, they mention someone that doesn't exist. Rather, they mention someone that the government had killed and wanted to obliviate the existence of that person. I think that's really messed up that the government wants Winston to do that. First of all, whenever somebody dies, the gov. always destroys anything that might hint to someone that the person who died existed. Destroy all evidence. Secondly, I know this isn't the U.S.A, but Times should be allowed to have the freedom of speech to write whatever they want. That proves that the government has complete control of almost everything. I would be freaked out if our gov. was like that. There isn't a lot of justice or fairness in that idea.

pg. 69/298
09/23/09

Copy down a quote from a character and tell why you think it's meaningful...

"It's a beautiful thing, the destruction of words..." -Syme

I think this is meaningful because Syme is one of the people who are writing the dictionary, entirely in Newspeak. I think Syme is talking about how destroying words from Oldspeak is a great cause for everyone and how honored they must be to have the only language that's vocabulary number is decreasing. I think the reason why they are destroying Oldspeak is because the government wants everyone to have the same thoughts, emotions, and ideas. If the gov. could, they would of changed the faces of everyone so they would look the same. They would've erased the line of individuality and merge everyone together. This is like the opposite of the U.S as it is now, and I'm glad it is. Winston must be thinking the samething and he must be tired of it since he has to write in Newspeak for his job.

pg. 86/298
09/24/09

Describe a part that surprised you...

There was this part where Winston was walking through a part of town that consists of people called proles. Proles are people who are sort of like people who resist the government. Anyway, as Winston was walking, the proles warned him a missle was comming, so everyone ducked and covered. I'm surprised at this because the proles were so used to the government shooting missles at them. Why would they shoot missles?! The govenment doesn't even consider them as human! Complete opposite of "All man are created equal" in America. And to think this is George Orwell's prophecy of what will happen in 1984. That is just a scary thought. It might even happen, too.

pg. 128/298
09/25/09

Make a prediction about what will happen next...

I think that Winston and Julia will somehow team up with other rebells of Big Brother and bring him down into submission and then London will lead the life that is like today's: free and fair. However, I think there will be a dramatic twist in the story, since George Orwell's books are sort of like that. The books I read, the good guys usually win and overpower the bad guys, but this book is a realistic fiction classic, so it might be the opposite since it's supposed to be based on real life. But right now, the setting suggests that idea, but it's too early in the book to tell.

So far, Conner is a bad kid so his parents have decided to have him unwound. Which means to have 100% of your body donated(like an organ donor). Conner decides to run away. Risa is a ward of the state. There isn't enough room so they decide to have her unwound.

If I was going to be unwound I would have done all I could do to get away. I would have felt bad for the bus driver that died because of me but it wouldn't have affected me much. It would drive me crazy trying to keep from being unwound. I guess I would rather be unwound than just die.

Describe a part that surprised you...

It surprised me when Levi was able to sneak away so easily. It surprised me at how long it took Conner and Risa to figure out that he was gone. It surprised me at how mean Levi could be to tell on Risa and Conner. It surprised me when Levi's Pastor said for him to stay away.

My favorite part of the book so far is when the antique shop owner asked if the baby was Conner and Risa's and when she told her to get pregnant again so they couldn't unwind her. It's my favorite part because in the end I want Conner and Risa to be together. I think Conner and Risa would make a great couple. They have such chemistry!!!

1. Tell what happened in the story.
The novel takes place in the past, during World War Two. These group of boys are on a school field trip, that requires the use of flight. So they borad a plane and head off too their destination, but as they were nearer their destination the plane was shot down by an enemy plane. So now they plane hurls towards the ocean, but luckily the plane crashes onto an island. Now the pilot is dead and all that remains are the children. The main character is fine and doesn't know where he is or if their are any other sevivors. As he collects his thoughts he finds another boy, named Piggy. Together they realize that they are alone, but in a good way. There are no more adults around. So the pair pretend to be explorers and explore to deserted island. They walk around the island until they find a conch shell. Ralph(main character) has no clue what it is but Piggy tells him its used as a horn. So both Ralph and Piggy come up with a plan, to use the conch to see if they can find any other survivors. Ralph blows the conch. Ergo, the other survirors hear it and come towards the sound. Like a dog whistle. As the survivors group up, Ralph and Piggy can see there are a lot more younger kids, estbalished as "littluns" than older kids. There is also a group led by a boy named Jack. The group was the choir and Jack was their soloist, as such he took charge. As all the children gather, Jack takes command, but everyone though the order should ome from the guy holding the shell or Ralph. The Conch, became the symbol of power. Ralph was elected leader and now the adventures starts. They make shelters, create signals to attract boats, they hunt, they swim, they play, a tropical resort. But problems start to arise. In ordser to keep life running, work must be done. But no one wants to do work. THings get shaky. Order is crumbling. Kids are now starting to get scared of the island. No shelter, wierd noises at night, no one to protect them.

2. Describe a Part that suprised you.
I was suprised that island can provided food and freshwater. All of these children are stuck on this desrted island, yet they can find fresh water and food. It can not mearly be a coincidence that the island they land on happens to be a paradise island. In the story, it talks about the island having lots of fruit and beautiful rivers. How can an island not have any wild animals... How can an island be so secure.

3.Describe your favorite part
My favorite part was when Ralph addressed the island as a clean environment. The "littun" had many stomaches from the fruit and berries, so they would go where ever the wanted. Which means anybody can step in, whatever you left behind. And since they've been on the island for so long, they no longer have shoes, direct contact.
4.Make a Prediction
I think that the whole order will fall apart and Ralph and Piggy will go off by themselves. I think Ralph will quit his postion of chief, because nobody works or does anything.
5.Quote
"For hunting. Like in war.You know-Dazzle Paint. Like moths on a tree trunk." This was the exact quote said by Jack before he wentr off hunting and successfully kiled a pig. This quote shows how smart and deep Jack really is. Hence, he is the leader of the hunters.

This book is absolutely tedious. As it was originally written in 1954, the language and speech is kind of hard to understand. Some of the descriptions and metaphors are archaic.

There where in the start of Foo 6 but they could kill in Foo altho no others could so they could be killed. Leven then had to make there way to the turrets and hope that Geth found his way as well.

Tell a part that surprised you.

I was surprised when Sabine turned the clouds in reality to evil living things. I never knew Sabine possessed the power to give life to everything in Foo. Sabine then has the power to make a new gateway to Foo. He also has the help of Dennis.

Tell your feelings about a character

Jamoon is a very big and powerful person. He is well over 6 and a half feet tall and posses extreme physical power. I feel that he is feared by almost every being in Foo. If i was faced with a person like this i would to fear him.

Make a prediction about what will happen next.

I think that Geth will meet Leven and Clover at the turrets where he can be restored to his original state that is more powerful then Jamoon. Fate in the book is working very well with the adventures to set a good path for them to get there.

Ask questions about things you don't understand.

What happened to Winter in her past?

How is Leven going to be able to save Winter and still restore Geth before the life drains out of him?

1. Tell what happened:
The three of them Miguel, Elena, And Javiar(javi)are hanging on the mata gente Which means people killer. It is an ordinary freight train that people jump onto to get to the north. There are train gangs that try to loot people and will rape children. To avoid that Elena writes AIDS on her chest to prevent rape.

2. Describe a part that suprised you:
What suprised me the most in the portion of the book that i read this week is when the mata gente derailed and killed hundreds of people. Lukily the trio was not aboard, as they chased off by boarder patrol.

3. Describe your feelings if you were a character:
If i were Miguel I would first want to get away from those patrols. Javi hurt his foot while running so i went to find some water. when i came back an indian couple were with Elena and Javi. Javi told me we had a ride north, and we used all our money.I got very angry but Elena thought it was the best way to go. we argued but i finally gave in later that night.

4. Describe your favorite part:
My favorite part is when they stow away in the coffee truck that the Indian couple offered to them. Then they reached the boarder town. According to Don clemente's directions they had to find EL Polmero at the boot stall. The man at the boot stall asked them questions about Don to see if they where the ones. They passed and the prepared to cross the boarder.

5. Make a prediction:
They crossed the boarder after hiking all night and the boot maker's real name is Moises. I predict that they will make it to california but something bad will happen, like maybe one of them is bitten by a rattle snake or stung by a scorpion. That would make the book more interesting.

Make a prediction about what will happen next...

I think that in the future, that Julia and Winston will get caught. They've been "dating" in secret since the government doesn't allow love because they fear for the people's loyalty to shift to another. Hence, dating in secret. Anyway, Winston finds that Julia is really clever and can plan everything through, but I think that eventually she'll slip up and then the government will catch them and most likely vaporize them. So right now they're staying in a room in a prole community...

Tell what happens in the story...

So far in 1984, Symes, the person who wrote the Newspeak dictionary, is gone. He's been vaproized by the government because he most likely knew too much. Winston and Julia also join a secret organization that involves taking down Big Brother. We still don't know if Big Brother exists or not, but O'Brien is hinting that Big Brother is the Party itself. O'Brien is sort of the leader of the organization, but we don't know that either. Anyway, Winston is going to recieve the book. It seems to be of value because a)It's going to be given to him in a discreet manner and b)It was in italics in the text. The book is probably going to be mentioned later on and what it's contents are.

Ask questions about thing that confuse you or that you wonder about...

At one point, Winston reads chapters 1 and 3: Ignorence is Stength, and War is Peace. The book explains the reason for the two statements, but it was very confusing how it was written. How did the Party come up with Ignorence is Strength and War is Peace? Did they understand the true meaning at the time they came up with it? Why is Winston reading a book that came from a rebellion group out loud, with chances of being caught are high? Why couldn't the phrasing in the book be a bit more simpiler, rather than the confusing logic it presents? How long did it take to figure out the true meaning of the statements?

Describe the part that described you...

The part that surprised me was how cruel the goverment treated their own people held captive. They treated them like they were dirt. No, less than dirt. For questioning, a couple of people are sent to a room, including Winston. They don't know when they are watched, but when the captives do something wrong, the guards come in and beat that person senseless. Eventually, it's Winstion's turn to be questioned. I'm also surprised at the fact that O'Brien was working with the Party and not against. Apperently his job was to find the rebellions by making a fake group and "brainwash" so to speak, them so they are with the government. That's what really surprised me. Another surprise was that the only reason O'Brien will not kill Winston because their minds think so much alike, except Winston is "crazy".

Describe your feeling of events...
-This is the end of this book... In otherwords, this is the spoiler...-

So they released Winston and Julia, but their relationship is pretty much broken. But Winston doesn't seem to care. The government has convinced him to whatever they say is right. The example they use in the book is that 2+2=5. And Winston believes that. He is a full supporter of the Party and he loves Big Brother. I thought that the Party would go that far to be in control was just plain wrong. I was sickened from the fact that the Party believes that they can control anything, whether it's the Law of Gravity or a person's mind. Apperently they can and that's the part that caught me off gaurd the most.

Pages 100-finished (short book)I am doing this second one because i forgot to do one last week.

1. Tell what happened:
As I predicted in my last response something bad did happen. Their guide Moises went over a hill to check out a weird sound. Then CRACK!! He was shot by the U.S. boarder patrol. So they are now back to three people again, and miguel doesn't like were this math is going.

2. Ask questions about stuff in book:
Why did the patrol shoot moises? couldn't they give a warning first or something? Would that get them into trouble? They could have tranquilized him or stunned him somehow. but don't shoot him!

3. Tell about the part that surprised you:
When the trio came apon a sandstorm. They hunkered down with their tarps over themselves like a ca-coon. Then in the evening they awoke and Javier was gone he left only his pack ant his water bottle. The two of them convinced themselves that the needed to move on to save energy.

4. My feelings on an event in the story:
Miguel and Elena after a day of hiking came across a body. A woman with a baby in her arms. This kind of scared me as I pictured it in my mind, because the desert preserves flesh for years. So this body could have been here for a while. Not to long after the come across a big road and a night sky line.

5. End of book, my thoughts...
The end in my opinion could have ended better. Basically the last chapter takes place ten years later and miguel Graduated college, Elena married Chuy (miguel's childhood friend). Miguel is talking on the phone to Elena and from what it looks like i think Elena is back in Mexico. This wasn't actually said but there were hints here and there. They were talking about next time they should meet then the book ends. This was a pretty good book and it is a quick ssyra book if you need to read one.

I think they will be going to their last stop. I think that because the fatigues keep telling them it's a graveyard. I think that someone might get hurt in the crates. I think that because the crates are tiny and the plane could have turbulence.

It surprised me that people actually died on the plane. It surprised me when they finally got there and it was an airplane graveyard. It surprised me that a former person of the military would be behind everything. It surprised me at how big the graveyard was.
