What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I read this book around January of 2006 for a college class. A researcher was creating artificial intelligence (AI) and if I remember right, each page was a separate email talking between the researcher and AI. The AI gets connected to the internet to be better at its job and leaves it host computer and comes back after a while. The researcher gets worried and disconnects the AI from the internet and the AI gets super bored. I think the computer gets re connected to the internet and the AI leaves a goodbye email but I'm fuzzy on that.
