Liam Carlson | 5 comments I read this series when I was a teenager/pre-teen, so 2000-2010.

All I remember is that it was about a young girl living in Canada who for whatever reason was transported to a fantasy world. I THINK she had some connection to it (familial?), and I want to say some of the villains were ogres/trolls/orcs, or similar to those.

I also believe she grew up with a single parent, I'm pretty sure the mother but I'm not entirely sure.

Also opened up a thread on reddit.com/r/tipofmytongue, and will update both sites if someone manages to figure this out.

I've tried googling it extensively, but things like "canadian author ya fantasy girl" and similar haven't yielded any good results.

EDIT: It's the Serpent's Egg by J. Fitzgerald McCurdy!

Cynthia | 186 comments Maybe something by Charles De Lint? He wrote a lot of YA urban fantasy set in Newford in the timeframe you mentioned.

Thanks for helping me out! Unfortunately I took a look through his bibliography and none of his books were what I'm thinking of.

I THINK the author was female, that's something I am pretty sure of.

Cynthia | 186 comments Could it be The Hidden World by Alison Baird?

message 5: by Liam (new)

Liam Carlson | 5 comments Unfortunately, it's not it either. I don't believe there was any Celtic or Gallic mythology, it was much more high fantasy.

I asked my librarian friend as well and she had suggested Hidden World as well!

Liam, do any of the authors "similar to" Alison Baird on LibraryThing.com sound familiar?

What a phenomenal resource! I've never heard of it before.

At a glance, no. But I'm going through each of the authors to see if any of their books jog my memory, and also checking out brief synopsis of their books as well!

Hey Cynthia! Someone on Reddit figured it out for me, it's The Serpent's Egg by J. Fitzgerald McCurdy. I edited my main post, wasn't sure if it was possible to tag multiple people in a comment (to let both you and Kris know).

I appreciate all the help! I've been flying high now that this has been lifted off my chest, it had been driving me crazy for a week!

Glad you found your book, Liam. Here's the link - The Serpent's Egg by J. Fitzgerald McCurdy.

"Ottawa lies under siege. Parliament Hill has fallen to dark forces" ... "the maze of caves and tunnels under the Library of Parliament" ... "an earthquake rips through Canada's Capital, creating a bottomless rift along the river" [a different form of Quebec separation?] ... Wow, that is Canadian.
