Pride month as we know resides in June in commemoration of the Stonewall riots of 1969. June is also the same month same-sex marriage was legalized in the US. All in all a time where at least in the mainstream, we celebrate that love is love. However, many would argue that soon as June is over, queer voices are not as seen or celebrated.
Therefore, this month there is no better time to continue reading about characters in the LGBTQIA+ community. Just because Pride Month is over shouldn’t mean celebrating and fighting for queer communities should end along with it : as our theme states they are queer and are not going anywhere. Our two book propositions for July both are own voices novels by authors from the LBGTQIA+ community
HERE ARE THE BOOK TITLES AND THEIR DESCRIPTIONS :
All boys Aren’t Blue by George M. Johnson
Through a series of personal essays, journalist and activist George M. Johnson invites us into exploring his coming of age as a queer black teenager in New Jersey & Virginia. All Boys Aren’t Blue explore the themes of “brotherhood, self-discovery, consent, toxic masculinity, and Black joy”. Through those essays we witness this young adult navigating his evolving selfhood and the challenges of society’s conditional love for his truthful existence.
Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado
Her Body and Other Parties consists of eight short stories that examine the psychology of women in contemporary society. This novel is difficult to categorize since it borders between psychological realism, science fiction, comedy, horror, fantasy and fabulism. A story full of bold queer women who have one thing holding them together.
