Fearless Firemoose! features these characters, reminding us that they're related to Rocky & Bullwinkle. Also the creator given most of the credit is Jay Ward (who apparently needs an author disambiguation).

There's also this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mr-Peabody-S...
I don't see it here on GR. It may be an activity book.
To clarify, I don't think I've found the answer... just some more clues to help someone who is a better researcher than I. Oh, and do know that the original TV show is much older than your friend... I saw a date of 1959.

This doesn't ring a bell for me but I wish you luck in your search, Davis. I know how special these treasured childhood books can be!
There is a group on GoodReads to help people track down books, so you might post there if you haven't done so yet:

The OP should check on ABE Books and put Mr. Peabody and Sherman in the keyword section doing an advanced search. There are quite a number of Mr. Peabody and Sherman books listed, most with bright cover images.

This book would have been published prior to 1999 — my friend was born 1987 and this would have been age-appropriate for a 3-8 year-old, and from the way she speaks of it I infer that she was about 5. She describes the book as a relatively large-format book with an audiocassette accompanying. The characters go on an adventure that somehow involves rainbows. She describes the cover as predominately yellow. She claims it was not a Golden Book, but I think she may be mistaken.
I am striking out solidly. Any recollections of such a book, or of authors of such books, or of series of such books from that time period would be vastly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
