How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi

How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi

Ibram X. Kendi's concept of antiracism reenergizes and reshapes the conversation about racial justice in America--but even more fundamentally, points us toward liberating new ways of thinking about ourselves and each other. In How to be an Antiracist, Kendi asks us to think about what an antiracist society might look like, and how we can play an active role in building it.

In this book, Kendi weaves together an electrifying combination of ethics, history, law, and science, bringing it all together with an engaging personal narrative of his own awakening to antiracism. How to Be an Antiracist is an essential work for anyone who wants to go beyond an awareness of racism to the next step: contributing to the formation of a truly just and equitable society.

Renee | 11 comments i find this book too textbooky for me. im going to start, "this book is anti racist. heard its better and more personal

Jayme I read this book last month for the GR group Nonfiction Nerds and thought it was very good overall. I liked that it was half memoir half historical context. I was hoping originally for more history and actual "suggestions" on how to be an antiracist, but once I figured out his writing style I fell into reading the book.

I think my takeaway is that, whether we want to admit it or not, we all fall somewhere on the racists spectrum and we have to honestly look at that and make conscious choices to be "antiracist." I know I thought once or twice while reading the book - "Sh*t I have done that." Awareness is the beginning, but now real change is in your actions. Who will you be going forward?

Michelle (mich2689) | 164 comments I just read this book and found it really eye opening. I read his other book, Stamped from the Beginning, a couple of months ago too. There was some redundancy between the two books but overall I quite enjoyed reading both of them.
