I have read a number of articles Coates wrote for The Atlantic, and both his non-fiction books have been on my TBR for a long time, so I was really happy to see my library got a copy of his first novel and there wasn’t a queue for it. This novel follows the story of Hiram, whose mother was an enslaved woman who was later sold away, and whose father was the owner of the plantation. Hiram has a strange power, and he also has the desire to escape the plantation where he has spent whole life. He succeeds with his scheme and makes it to Philadelphia where he lives as a free man for the first time, but quickly comes to the realisation that he will never be a truly free man if his loved ones are still enslaved. This was a beautifully written book, although, at times, very difficult to read, with the focus on how slavery tore so many families apart.
