(ebook is for editions not published on Amazon, but published on other platforms)
well i screwed something up... I think its because I took the period off after J in one place but not another? How can I fix this?

Thank you. I appreciate it. Suddenly J Calamy had no books and J. Calamy had no profile. I need to stop messing around.
Amazon "ebooks" are identified as Kindle format and use ASIN for identification.Ebooks on non-Amazon platforms [Barnes & Noble, Apple, Kobo, for example] use ISBNs and identified as ebook.
Please do not change ISBN editions to Kindle format.
If you wish to create the Kindle edition as the default one, please open the Kindle record and follow these instructions to set it.
Setting Default Edition

so the book should have two editions- one for kindle with the asin, and another as an ebook with the isbn?Is that right?
in principle then, when I'm on the ebook edition the amazon link wont work, but the b&n/kobo etc will work?
I appreciate your patience as I learn this.

If that ISBN is in the catalog of an ebook retailer, then yes it will. In some cases, Kobo and B&N use their own identification numbers.
Goodreads maintains records of titles [Pride and Prejudice for example] with thousands of editions. Each has a unique identifier and specific format.
