Father Elijah was a deeply impactful read. I could very easily divide my life into the time before reading it and the time after reading it. Michael D O’Brien ripped my heart open and opened me up to a whole new world of beauty and sacrificial love in this book. I think that anyone who enjoys What God is Not would also really enjoy this book. There are a lot of common themes throughout both.

Fr. Michael's pick for the Aug 2022 What are you Reading post. He writes, "I've been wanting read this for decades and finally started." This book pick caused great delight in the podcast team, as several of us have been recommending this book to him for years!

Just saw that this is the fourth in a series called "Children of the Last Days" according to Goodreads. Would I have to read the first 3?

I know this thread is old, but no, you can totally read Father Elijah without having read the others. I haven’t read all of them yet. They’re linked together but can also stand alone. It’s a great book!

Friends, I recently discovered O'Brien. I am about 200 pages in, and love the way Father Elijah's interior life is as much a part of the story as anything else. I don't remember encountering this in any other work of fiction.
Are all of his other works similar?

They are all like that! My favorite work of O'Brien's is Island of the World, it's very powerful. Definitely in my top 3 favorite novels.

I second Jennifer's comment about Island of The World. It's amazing. I love all his work. His first novel, Cry of Stone, touched me deeply too. Since finding his books I have decided to forgo secular fiction and stick to his novels, and other Catholic writers, as this type of reading doesn't feel like time wasting.

Just finished Father Elijah. Whoa.
I literally did not want to put this book down! The characters in this book bring to life the far to often hidden spiritual battle for souls.
It’s a life changing book.
I’m ready to buy all of Michael O’Brien’s books!!!

Read this recently due to the recommendation on the podcast.
