Dewey's 24 Hour Read-a-Thon discussion

Hello! It's 1pm here in New Hampshire and I've finished my first book and just barely started my second one ! This brings me to my question for you!

Who are your top 5 auto-buy/must-read authors?

I just finished my first Jasmine Guillory novel but truth be told, I own all of her books! And now after loving The Wedding Date, she has become a definite auto-buy author for me and I just pre-ordered her latest which publishes in June!

Among my other auto-buy authors are Laurell K. Hamilton, Cassandra Clare, Angie Thomas, and Diana Gabaldon. *cough* Taran Matharu, Genevieve Cogman, Philip Pullman, Andy Weir, and Brian K. Vaughn round out my top 10. lol.

They are my auto-buy but I cannot say in all honesty that they are my must-read...eep. You'd think they'd go hand-in-hand! lol. I would LOVE for them to be but so many other books get in the way! Be they ARCs or library books or books fitting into challenges. I'm very bad about buying a book and then not reading that book for months or...years. lol.

And by the way, how is it hour 6 already?!?! I'll be back for the Hour 10 Discussion!

Oh I love this! I have to say my number 1 auto buy is anything written by Sara J Maas! Her series (apart from Crescent City) are my favorite! I also love Nora Roberts. She has been a favorite author of mine for decades now. I would read anything co-written by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. Also Kerri Maniscalco!

I think Christopher Paolini (I own all of his books), Brandon Sanderson, Eoin Colfer and Dan Brown :)
So far, I really like Sabaa Tahir's and Terry Prachtett & Neil Gaiman's writing style so I think they'll go on my favorite author list too.

An auto-buy author is definitely Christopher Paolini for me, his writing style is great and I just love his story's. I haven't read his last book, To Sleep in a Sea of Stars, yet, but I'm very excited to do so!

Mine would be Kazuo Ishiguro, Madeline Miller, Donna Tartt and David Mitchell. If they publish a new book (like Klara and the Sun earlier this year) I want it the very day it comes out!

Oh, interesting. While thinking about your question, I just realised that even when it comes to my favourite authors, I don't own all of their books/buy their newest publication. I wonder why? Maybe I want to save up the experience of buying a new book by a favourite author and make it last as long as possible? ... or it might just be a case of too many books not enough time, lol!

I agree! My must buy isn't the same as my must read lol Hmm...Eric Jerome Dickey, Wally Lamb, Akwaeke Emezi, Isabel Wilkerson, and guilty pleasure Tara Janzen.

Oh Paolini and Sabaa Tahir are more auto-buys for me! I really liked his Paolini's first foray into adult novels and science fiction with To Sleep in a Sea of Stars! It was gargantuan but really good!

I read mostly in French and I like to read everything from Simon Boulerice, Marie-Renée Lavoie, Heather O'Neill, Delphine de Vigan and Katherine Pancol.

I do own the ToG series (haven't finished it yet) but haven't bought any ACOTAR book yet or CC. I've slowly started getting into Nora Roberts' fantasy books.

Oooh those are some tough ones for me. I didn't like Remains of the Day, The Goldfinch, Cloud Atlas, and The Bone Clocks. lol. But I DID enjoy Song of Achilles and Circe!!

So many of my top auto-buy authors are either no longer writing or have died. Some have simply lost the spark over time.

I don't really buy a lot of books new as I love used bookstores and used book sales. Then if I do buy new it is almost always from the "sale" table so it is hit or miss.

However, there are certain authors that as soon as I know they have a new book out I put my name down at the library to reserve it and can't wait to read it!

1. Fredrik Backman (once it is translated to English)
2. Abbi Waxman
3. Mary Higgins Clark (all though I was sad she passed away recently)
4. Kristin Hannah
5. Janet Evanovich (my guilty pleasure)

I have several authors I've recently discovered that I am making my way through everything they have currently written, but those above I've read most or all of their books available in English.

this is hard because most of the writers I'm enjoying are dead but I'm always excited when I unearth a lost Robert Sheckley or a get a new story from Martha Wells. Great question

Yesss to Backman! He's definitely an auto-borrow for me! I only own one of his books and that's only because it was free. lol. But I do love his books.

It's so easy to auto-buy Diana Gabaldon because it's only once every 6-8 years. lol. I do wonder what she's going to do in 8 more years when the final Outlander book is done! :O

Oooh Sepetys is an auto-borrow for me! I have borrowed all of hers except I own Out of the Easy and still need to read that one. lol

Dan Brown is an auto-borrow for me! I did love Origin though.

Oh for sure, Riley Sager! I've been choosing his books on BOTM for every new release of his since Lock Every Door and definitely crossing my fingers for July's BOTM to be Survive the Night! But I do still need to read Lock Every Door AND Home Before Dark.

However, for the first time ever...I pre-ordered two books....Namesake and The Legacy (Sept 2021) by Adrienne Young. I read the first one, Fable and LOVED it so immediately jumped on to get Namesake, which was a pre-order and the 3rd was just announced...so pre-ordered!

I’ve only read The Last Time I Lied and Home Before Dark so far. I’m debating about preordering Survive the Night since I’m thinking they probably offer it on BOTM.

I'm really late to the party, but this is such a fun question, I wanted to join in =)
I have 3 auto-buy authors, Jennifer Donnelly, Mason Deaver, and Caroline Leech.

Jennifer Donnelly has written so many different genres, and her writing is lyrical and transporting. Recently, she's been writing fairytale retellings, like Stepsister (which is my favourite of hers, a Cinderella retelling), Poison (Snow White), and Lost in a Book (Beauty and the Beast).

Mason Deaver is a non-binary author who writes own-voice, gender non-conforming characters. They debuted in 2019 with I Wish You All The Best and I fell in love immediately. They don't have too many books out, but they have a new book coming out June 1st that I've already pre-ordered and I'm so excited for.

Caroline Leech writes ya historical fiction with a side of sweet romance. She's only written two books so far, but I absolutely loved both of them and am craving more books by her, so the second she announces a new release, I will be counting down the days until I can read it. Also, her latest book, In Another Time, features a disabled love interest, which is so exciting because it brings diversity into historical fiction which is rarely seen.

Oooh I love fairy tale retellings!! I've definitely heard of Jennifer Donnelly but I don't think I've read any of her books. And Mason Deaver has been in my TBR since I first heard of their debut but I haven't read it yet! I haven't heard of Caroline Leech but I love historical fiction.

Ahhh a fellow Ranger's Apprentice fan! I borrowed most of the series from my husband's coworker and then have been borrowing from the library for all of the spin-off series. So he's an auto-borrow for me but I do enjoy his books!
