Vanessa (nesshawk) COLLECTIVE NOUN QUARTERLY
THIRD QUARTER, 2021
DATE: 07/01/21 - 09/30/21

Introducing a new quarterly challenge! Let's work our way through all the fascinating collective nouns out there! This challenge will have a task and spellout option. You can complete either or both, but books will only count for one section.

Ways to complete an item:
1. Title: The first letter of each title word or series title can be found in either the collective noun or animal name; no word count limit, but all words count. Ignore any subtitles.

2. Author: The author's first and last initials found in either the collective noun or animal name.

3. Cover: The collective noun or animal is found on the cover; please post the cover.

4. Text: The collective noun or animal name is found in the text of the book; please provide page/location and sentence information. (Singular forms of animals also accepted!)

✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱

There are 10 collective nouns and 10 animals to work with. You can choose your level, and can get there via the task option, by spelling out a few of the words, or any combination of the two.

Level One - Dabbling: 10 books
Level Two - Focused: 15-19 books
Level Three - Devoted: 20-25 books
Level Four - Over-Committed: 25+ books

huddle of walruses
tower of giraffes
cackle of hyenas
knot of toads
cluster of antelope
sedge of cranes
dazzle of zebras
shadow of jaguars
charm of finches
kettle of hawks

For the spell-out option, for difficult letters Q, X, Y and Z, the letter need only appear in the title, author's first or last name, or the series title. It does not have to be the first letter.

For all the overacheiving, spell-out obsessed members out there, I will also be posting an open-ended version in the Spell-Out folder!

HELPFUL HINTS!

✱ The author initials or the first letter of all title words can be found in either the noun (i.e. huddle) or animal (i.e. walruses). However, I am flexible. If this gets too challenging, you can use the whole phrase! 😉

✱ You do not have to complete every animal, just a certain number of books per level. For example, if you have two books whose author initials can be found in antelope, you can count both of those!

Barb To be sure I understand this correctly, using the tower of giraffes as an example, do the author initials have to be found in 'tower' OR 'giraffes,' or can we use the entire phrase? The same goes for the first letter of all title words. And if a book has a subtitle, do the first letters of those words also have to be in the phrase, or can we ignore the subtitle?

Barb One more question : For level 1, do all ten books have to be from different animals, or can we use the same one multiple times? For example, if I have two books whose author initials can be found in antelope, can I count both of those?

message 13: by Shelly (last edited Jul 24, 2021 06:40PM) (new)

Shelly My question is this. Do both words in the phrase need to be found together or in the same book or can you do one book for ex: Huddle and a separate book for Walruses?

Shelly, I've just been using the animal names in the text, she said singular or plural is ok. I'm using the collective noun and animal when I hunt for the initials or title initials. Kinda sure it wouldn't be the whole phrase you need to find. Hope this helps, maybe Vanessa will pop in and see it.

Saw this wasn't answered yet and just thought I'd share how I'm doing it. I'm going with one of any of the three things for each animal. I first did only one thing per animal, then since it goes longer, I decided to see if I could find any of the missing items like author or text for ones I only found title initials on. One title, one author and one text for each set, in other words. Just going on what other similar challenges have done and hoping for the best :) Hope that makes sense :) PS check under my spoiler tags to see what I'm talking about. I only use the tags to keep from having to scroll a lot lol.

message 16: by Barb (new)

Barb That's one way to interpret the challenge, and it's good that you've found it to work for you. But I know it's very unlikely that I'll find one of each category for each animal, so I guess I'll just settle for using each animal only once.

FYI, I'm not sure you saw Vanessa's answer to my question about using the entire phrase or only part of it when looking for author initials or title letters.

I asked ...Using the tower of giraffes as an example, do the author initials have to be found in 'tower' OR 'giraffes,' or can we use the entire phrase? The same goes for the first letter of all title words.

And she replied The author initials or the first letter of all title words should be found in either 'tower' OR 'giraffes.'

Oh wow I completely missed that, and I usually get email alerts on anything coming from mods. Yep I saw she said either or but since I used both words minus of, it sounds like that's ok too. :)
