This book started to come together much more around half way through. I thought that once Ivy died and the cases started to really form a pattern that I became more involved. The ending was very clever, the way it wrapped round to that first situation which I had sort of forgotten about by then. For a first book, it was a good effort though it seemed a bit lacking somehow. He has a good set of characters there on the ambulance crew which could all be developed nicely. There's definitely a series in there if he goes on writing. I liked the policeman too and that relationship was great. I would read another by this author.
I also thought it was pretty good for a debut and could easily have a series to follow up this first book. Novels involving paramedics and medical issues are always interesting and that side of it was well done. The author is a paramedic and has clearly seen it all on the streets of Brisbane.Initially I did find the character of Jono a bit too strong, always bucking authority and ranting about problems with the system but that settled down (once the author got it out of his system!) and I liked him more. He is a wise-cracking larrikin, generally liked by others but a bit of a thorn in the side of management.
The mystery was good and neither Jono nor I guessed the murderer!
