Cosmic horror is so neat because of how it retains that fear of the unknown. I completely agree with you that The Thing (1982) is the best sci-fi horror of all time.Annihilation was the most recent cosmic horror standing out for me. With an honorable mention to The Void as well.
Have you had a chance to delve into the Dead Space (video game, novel, and graphic novels) series at all? I found it utterly terrifying, compelling, imaginative, and fun all at the same time. Extremely interested in the upcoming Callisto Protocol game if you haven't heard of it yet. Looks very promising from Glen Shofield, the original director for the Dead Space series.
Here is a cinematic trailer for the new game if you are interested:

Another sci-fi horror series which has been near and dear to my heart since I was a kid is the Doom series. Not much of a fan of the first movie, but the recent Doom: Annihilation was better. I'll never get the very first book out of my head Doom: Knee Deep in the Dead, which I read when I was only in grade 4 and left a bit of an impression with me when I first read it.

Cosmic horror, alien horror, etc, what's yours? It can take place on Earth, too. Mine is (and probably always will be) The Thing. In my opinion it's one of the best horror movies ever made, period, and the fact that the creature is so alien to us that we never even see its true form--if it has one--makes it one of the most terrifying monsters of all.
