Finished my first book yesterday! Protecting What's Mine by Lucy Score. An easy read with all the feels. Started it on 1/1 and finished on 1/5. Good start to the New Year :)
Finished my 2nd book today! French Twist, by James Patterson. One of his BookShots, and the third book in the Detective Moncrief series. As always, James Patterson doesn't disappoint!
Finished my 3rd book today! Clause Universe #5, Clause: Rise of the Miser by Tony Bertauski. What can I say? Santa Claus meets futuristic sci-fi. I've read all the series so far (1-5), still have 4 more to go. It grows on you. Since this is not my first time with Bertauski, I have grown to enjoy his books. This particular book was about Santa Claus and the Heat Miser. Looking forward to the next one. I have also read a John Grisham creation. While it does count for TBR challenge -- in the sense that I did own it prior to 2022 -- it was pretty deceptive of the length. It was only like 20 pgs and had pictures. I purchased on Kindle, thinking "I'll give Grisham a try". I do like mystery/thriller and it was medical, so that was intriguing. BUT.... when I finally did get around to reading it, I was sorely disappointed. It is more like an article, than a book. Therefore, I will give it an Honrable Mention it in my list, but not count it in my 24 books.
Finished my 4th book for my Challenge! South Dakota Showdown by Nicole Helm. It's not my typical read. It's a Harlequin Intrigue, more suspense/thriller than romance. It takes place in South Dakota, which is the main reason I got it. My husband is from there and we saw the book at the store one day. Then I got it on Kindle. Anyway, it's about a big time Biker Gang and is not overly gruesome and doesn't have much violence. It's a fairly quick and easy read. The main characters pull you in and you want to keep going to know what happens to them.
Finished my 5th book yesterday! Taking the Titanic was short, not so sweet, as it was about 2 theives loose on the Titanic. It was one of James Patterson's many BookShots. Thought I would get some shorter books in to gain some ground on my climb. This year, I've already read 8 books! (Yay me!!! lol) However, 3 of them have been Library books, which sadly do not count for my TBR climb.
Finished books #6 & #7 this week! Up to 11 total for the year (4 are library, so they don't count :( ) #6. The Witnesses, by James Patterson. Another one of his BookShots. Super fast and fun! Takes place over the time of only a couple of days, it's fast paced and goes back and forth between several people. Flows very well, and does not feel choppy at all. As usual, Patterson does not disappoint!
#7. Three Graves Full, by Jamie Mason. This was an impulse purchase a while back. Probably after it first came out, in 2013. It sounded interesting, and I'm sooo glad I purchased it!! It's probably my favorite read so far this year. There's so many twists and turns, I could not put it down! And her debut book as well! She did not disappoint!! Definitely a keeper!
Wow! I can't believe April is almost over! I have finished books #8 & #9 on my TBR recently.#8. The One and Only Ivan, by Katherine Applegate. A cute and easy read. The story is told through the simple eyes of a Gorilla who is held capitve in a "circus". I like the simplicity of it. Even though it's simple, it's still very emotional and complex. Definitely recommend for readers of all ages. :)
#9. The Shack, by William P Young. I have to admit, I was putting this one off. I've seen the movie years ago, and loved it. However, sometimes the movie is better than the book, and I didn't want to be disappointed, Especially since I happened to see the movie first. I am happy to say, I was not diappointed. While I don't remember everything from the movie, I remembered the basic storyline, and the movie and the book both followed the same general storyline. I'm sure there are differences, however I would have to watch the movie again to see exactly what those differences are. I would also recommend this one, whether or not you have seen the movie first. It definitely shares an important message.
Finished Book#10 recently. The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek. It was amazing! A lot better than I was expecting. Takes place in Appalachia Kentucky during the 1930s. It's about a woman who is "Blue" and how she struggles to fit in and survive. I love historical fiction and I was thrilled when I found out there was a sequel! If only I knew about it last year, then I could add it to my list after I read it. :/ I also added another Honorable Mention to my list. Heckler's Storm was HORRIBLE. It was a short story, only like 50 pgs. I thought it was a horror story about baseball and was interested. But it was horribly written, and was way more gore than horror. It was absurd! There wasn't even a decent ending. The only good thing about it was 1 kindle pg = 2%, so it was a super quick read. Definitely DO NOT RECOMMEND.
Just finished Books #11 & #12 this weekend. #11. was The Christmas Fix by Lucy Score. A super easy read that pulls you in. It's the sequel to Mr Fixer Upper. It's about a Home Renovation tv show. The stars are twin brother and sister. This book, The Chrismas Fix was about the sister. She takes on renovating an Entire Town, called Merry, Connecticut. The timing is super short, like 2 months to rebuild the town before Christmas or the town will lose the biggest festival of the year (and most of the town's revenue for the year). I really enjoyed the simplicity and easiness of the story.
#12 Hot Winter Nights by Codi Gary is one of James Patterson's BookShots, so it was short and sweet. It takes place over the span of a few weeks, and is about a woman who moves from New York to a small rural town in Montana to run the hospital. It definitely pulls you in and is super easy to read in one sitting, only took me like 2 hours! Then I found out it has a sequel (which I did purchase and sadly will not be part of my climb if I decide to read it now).
This week I finished #13 on my list. Every Breath by Nicholas Sparks. I love his books! I've read almost every one so far. While all of his books are "comfort books" (kind of like comfort food, lol). I love how he can pull you in and keeps you going because you just want to know what happens to the characters. According to the autor's note, this one is based on a true story. Tru and Hope meet during crucial times in their lives and over a few short days fall in love. I loved how their story unfolds and how Sparks decides to end the story of their journey. Definitely would recommend.
I've gotten behind on my reviews. I am already on book #20! With 2 motnhs left, I think I can make it!#14 on my list was The Isle oof the Lost. This book is based on the Disney original movies The Descendants. Which is about the kids of all the Disney movies. All the Villians are imprisoned on the Isle of the Lost and all the kingdoms are brought togehter. The Isle of the Lost book actually takes place Before the first Descendants movie. It tells of how all 4 of the Villian Kids become friends. If you like the Descendant movies, then you will LOVE the Isle of the Lost books. I do recommend reading/watching them in order to get the full effect.
#16 is the 2nd Isle of the Lost book: Return to the Isle of the Lost. This book takes place after the 1st movie. The kids go back to the Isle of the Lost. They receive a mysterious letter that requests their presence on the Isle. They sneak back, and end up on an adventure to defend Auradon.
#18 on my list was the third book, Rise of the Isle of the Lost, which is about Ursula's daughter, Uma and how she is going to get off the Isle and take over Auradon. It's kind of like a prequel to the 2nd movie. It talks of how Uma gets her boat and her pirate crew. Again definitely worth the read if you like the Descendants movies.
I'm currently reading the 4th book in the series: Escape from the Isle of the lost (review to come).
My stand alone books that I read are:
#15 was The Witch of Blackbird Pond. I don't know why I didn't read this sooner! It is about a girl who goes to New England during pre-revolutionary times to stay with her aunt and uncle after her grandfather passes away. She was raised on an island by her grandfather and lived a very different life than her aunt and uncle who are Puritans by faith. Because she "different" and she gets accused of witchcraft. As I love historical fiction, this was difintely worth the read. Again, I don't know why I kept putting this off!
#17 A Doll's House. I read it a million yrs ago (ok, maybe only like 20) in school, and I re-read it for the first time just now. I've always loved the play, but reading it this time, it sat very differently with me. First off, I think I combined this one with another one, as the ending I remember is very different. Also, now as an adult, I understand the storyline and themes a lot more than as a child reading it in school. Even though it is not what I remember, I still immensly enjoyed it.
# 19 was A Graveyard Book. One I've had for a long time, and just got around to reading. It is about a boy who is raised by a graveyard after his parents and sister were murdered one night. The baby wanders into a nearby graveyard, and is taken in by the spirits of the graveyard. Definitely one I would recommend.
I finally got around to updating my books! Apparently, I finished my challenge on 12/5!!! Wahooo!!!! And I still have 2 books in progress right now. I looked at the next mountain, and that's 12 books. I don't think I can read 12 books in the next 2.5ish weeks of the year. I would love to try though! If I feel I'm getting close I can jump in. I'm still going to keep track of my books though! I can't wait for what the new year brings! I'm exicted to try both the Mount TBR and Virtual Mount TBR challenges coming up! :)
