There may have been talking animals? And I vaguely remember the story not being able to continue unless the reader continued reading.

The Great Good Thing from the Sylvie Cycle by Roderick Townley? A short, sweet trilogy about a girl who lives in a book, where the characters have to "perform" the story every time a reader opens it.
