Sermon had just let out. Adley's father was chatting with a group of angels nearby. Adley was close enough to hear what Ephraim was saying but tried his hardest to ignore it.
"As long as you truly devote yourself to Christianity, God will find you..."
Adley hated it all. He wanted to go home and hide. Why did he even come here in the first place?
"God is good, God loves you..."
Right. Ephraim had dragged Adley here. There's nowhere anyone can hide from Ephraim. Ephraim always knows where Adley is.
"Pray to God every hour of the day. Pray to Him and you will be pure."
Adley didn't want to be pure. If Ephraim was supposed to be pure and clean of all sin, then Adley would try his hardest to be sinful and unclean.
"I hope you can find your way to God."
Ephraim's words echoed throughout Adley's head. Adley just wanted to go to his house and hide from Ephraim. He sat in the pew and waited for the congregation to clear out. As he sat and waited, someone began talking to him.
"Adley, I'm so grateful you could come." It was Ephraim.
"Did I even have a choice?" Adley mumbled, standing up and walking to a different pew. He just wanted Ephraim to leave him alone.
"Someone help me," Adley whispered to himself, tears building up in his eyes.
AJ skipped into the church, eyes setting on Adley. Who looked.. upset. More upset than usual. He bounded up to him, taking the bag of self made sugar cookies out of his satchel. “Adley! Hey! I was hoping that we could go get boba or something? I know this really good place. Are you okay? It’s okay if you don’t want to talk about it, if you just wanna get outta here. I can do either one. Can I hold your hand?” He was everywhere, as he usually was. But he tried to reel it in for Adley.
Adley smiled when he saw AJ. AJ was one of Adley's 3 favourite people.
"Hey AJ!" Adley said, his sadness going away instantly. "I'd love to go get boba with you," Adley said. "And I'll be fine. I just... I don't like it here." He stood up and dusted off his suit. "Of course, you can hold my hand." Adley smiled. AJ always managed to make Adley happier.
"I recently bought a few new books, would you like to read some with me sometime?" Adley asked, his eyes lighting up.
AJ took Adley’s hand and squeezed it gently, holding out the bag of sugar cookies. It was mostly see through, with a ribbon the same color as AJ’s wings. “Yeah! I’d love to. What are they called?” AJ swung their hands, leaning his head on Adley’s shoulder.
Adley smiled and took a cookie. "One of them is titled Tempête Verte. Originally, it was all written in French, but I can translate it for you. A lot of the books I like are in foreign languages. There's another book written in German that's titled Winzige Welt. I think we've read that one before though. It's about a man who drinks something weird and gets shrunk, so he has to navigate the world and survive." Adley then stopped.
"I'm sorry. I'm talking too much," he said.
“No, I like it when you talk! I think your voice is beautiful. I like that you like to talk to me. It makes me happy.” AJ hums, grinning wide at Adley. And every word was the truth. He liked seeing Adley happy. Adley deserved to be happy, and the fact that AJ could be a part of his happiness was more than he could’ve ever asked for.
Adley blushed and covered his face with his jacket. "I- um, thank you. I enjoy your voice as well." Adley smiled. If Adley didn't have AJ, he'd probably still be stuck having his dad order him around. "May I hug you?" he asked quietly. Adley loved AJ with his entire existence. He wished he had more chances to tell AJ how much he loved him. Adley wanted to be with AJ forever.
AJ visibly brightened at the question, and stopped in his tracks.“Of course!” He giggled, swaying side to side to keep moving. Adley made his cheeks hurt. He smiled too much about Adley. Just hearing his name made AJ smile. It was juvenile and stupid, but it made AJ happier than he’d ever been.
Adley gently wrapped his arms around AJ, burying his face into the crook of AJ's neck. "I love you," he whispered quietly. Adley smiled softly. He wanted to hug AJ forever and ever. AJ was the light of Adley's life. AJ was the sun- things wouldn't ever be the same without him. Adley gently played with AJ's hair as they hugged. Adley loved AJ so much.
AJ wrapped his arms around Adley quickly, kissing his temple. “I love you too, Adley.” He hums. He could’ve stayed like this forever, like a statue. He’d never get bored, just standing here, with Adley. Adley never made him bored. AJ could sit in silence with him for hours and he wouldn’t ask for anything more than that. Adley was.. everything. Adley made AJ feel like he was enough.
Adley smiled and swayed side to side, humming as he did so. "Do you have a song you like?" Adley whispered as he twirled around, holding AJ tightly in his arms. "Or a movie? Or a book?" Adley continued humming. AJ brought light into Adley's life. AJ made Adley finally feel complete. "If it's a song, we can sing it together. If it's a movie, we can watch it. If it's a book, I can read it with you." Adley smiled. Anything to make AJ happy.
“Hmmm.. have you ever seen V for Vendetta? I think you’d like it. I kinda.. have something for you. A song. For you.” AJ mutters, kissing Adley’s chin, then his forehead. He was holding his face in his hands. AJ found it peculiar, how the smallest things AJ did made Adley happy. As if he wouldn’t make the world spin backwards if he knew Adley liked it better that way.
Adley paused to think. "I don't think I have seen that. I'll put it on my to-do list though!" Adley confidently stated. "You have a song for me? That's so sweet of you, AJ!" he said. Adley blushed when AJ kissed him. It's not like they hadn't kissed before, but it still made Adley's heart flutter every time. Adley smiled, knowing everything was safe around AJ even though they were in Ephraim's church.
AJ kissed the tip of Adley’s nose, pressing his forehead to the other boy’s. “We should get out of here, though. I think he’s watching us. Come with me.” AJ whispered, tugging gently on Adley’s hands. Adley was everything AJ could’ve asked for. The universe threw him a huge bone when it gave him Adley Vespertine.
Adley glared at the white-haired priest and nodded.
"Where would we go?" Adley gently asked AJ, slowly making his way towards the door. Adley knows how much Ephraim dislikes AJ- how dare he- and Ephraim despises Adley and AJ's relationship even more. It was best not to anger Ephraim though- Adley's childhood is why.
“To a field, somewhere. Or to a bakery. Or we could go to my house. I have cookies cooling on the counter right now. If you’re up for that.” AJ hums, leaning his head on Adley’s shoulder. It was fine that Ephraim hated him. AJ hated Ephraim. So that was fine.
Adley nodded. "I don't care where we go. I just want to be with you."
He looked at Ephraim. Adley knew what the priest was thinking. It was something Adley saw in a movie and repeated to Ephraim. God is good, God is straight.
Adley glared at his father before sighing and taking AJ's hand, gently guiding him outside. "Where to?"
“Okay, okay! Let’s go!” AJ tugged at Adley’s hand, grinning like a child on Christmas morning. He stole a quick kiss. He was practically skipping, quickly making his way in front of Adley due to it. His wings were fluttering out of excitement. He wanted to kiss him again. He always wanted to kiss Adley.
The kiss caught Adley off-guard, but he liked it. Adley wrapped an arm around AJ and smiled, leaning his head onto AJ's.
"I love you," he whispered softly, kissing AJ's head. Adley didn't know where they were going. He disn't care. He just wanted to be with AJ.
“I love you too. I’m glad you’re able to hang out today. I missed you.” AJ murmurs, kissing Adley’s jaw. “Cutie.” He said absentmindedly, cheeks flushed pink. He leaned into Adley’s warmth, enjoying everything about him. His smell, his smile, how warm he was.
“We should take a nap after we go out. You look sleepy.”
