Doug Snelson | 1 comments Hello, Christine,
My name is Doug Snelson. I have published 3 children's picture books and 1 book of poetry. I believe you have asked me a question regarding my best practices for promoting picture books.

I feel somewhat inadequate working with Goodreads simply because I don't look at it on a consistent basis so forgive me for taking so long to get back.

In my case, I find the best way to promote my picture books is through Constant Contact. I have been trying to build a strong email list over the past few years. I seem to get repeat business from the same people though I try to get new names and emails as much as possible to expand my reach.

When I conduct schools author visits I seem to sell a reasonable amount of books (20-50 copies per visit maybe). I try to get a small appearance fee of a few hundred dollars but have received almost $1,000.00 with one school.

Book festivals and book fairs also work well for me.

I purchased a Goodreads Giveaway and seemed to get a very nice response in interest though, frankly, I don't believe I sold many copies. I intend on trying the Giveaway program again.

As a member of IBPA and Writers & Publishers Network, I have purchased email blasts to librarians and book reviewers with some minor success. I typically don't sell enough books through either of these organizations to justify the investment but I press on and will most likely purchase more of these programs.

I have received very nice reviews from the Midwest Book Review and Kirkus Reviews which add to my overall credibility in the marketplace.

Thank you for asking the question.
Sincerely,
Doug Snelson
