Just a couple of comments on the adapted screenplay award which has the same nominees for Bafta and Oscar. Maggie Gyllenhaal swept the Independent Spirit Awards yesterday winning best screenplay and director while her The Lost Daughter won best picture. The screenplay is based on a Paul-sized novel of the same name, The Lost Daughter by Elena Ferrante and while the film is not a masterpiece, it is a lot better than some of the Oscar and Bafta best picture nominees, and features two great performances by Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley. The best thing is that it fits well as a candidate of one of my favorite new pastimes which is to read the work than immediately watch the adaptation for comparison, the object not being to judge, but to see how another chooses to perceive a work. Power of the Dog is also in this category and these are two of my favorites among the nominees so far.
Now you see Paul used to be (and I think still is) a complete Ferrante-Stan We watched together (but at his suggestion) the play of the books - which was like 2/3 plays in one which we watched for hours on end
On the Oscar front, I liked the minimalist but long Drive My Car, once I figured out how to turn subtitles on. Paul would probably insist on shortening by removing a large chunk of the moving car scenes. The Power of the Dog was creepy good.
Dune was great and the only one of which based on a book that I've read.
Paul goes to the cinema for the trailers only - he thinks of them as Moviegoers Digest Condensed Films
Fan of CODA here--I'm really hoping Troy Kotsur gets best supporting actor. His character was the most memorable of the year for me.
My daughter really liked Drive My Car.I only tend to be interested in the Oscars when there are Korean movies involved - or US ones where the characters speak Korean.
Is Squid Game featured this year - thought I saw some coverage that 이정재 and 정호연 had won the best male and best female actors awards respectively.
Squid Game was a series so not eligible for Oscars. I loved the series and it got me looking for more Korean series, but so far I've only watched one sci fi series, the name of which escapes me, and liked it a lot. I'm eager to watch CODA but not eager to sign up for Apple Plus in order to see it. I may be able to watch on an AA flight that has wireless so maybe when I, hopefully, fly to Spain in April I can view it.

I dropped Prime so I could pick up apple and the hulu/disney package. I will try apple for a couple of individually rented films that aren't included with my services.
I tried the free 7 day trial of Apple Plus a few months ago, and I was surprised that it didn't allow access to many of its series - for example I couldn't get Shmigadoon. In fact, just about the only access it gave me was to a very long commercial for Apple Plus that starred some famous people, and masqueraded as a 20 or 30 minute show until the end, which was a big pitch for Apple Plus. Pissed me off. Maybe the trial has changed since then - I'd be interested to hear other experiences with the trial.

Coda was pretty good with what I liked outweighing my dislikes.
