This is the second book I've read by Dykes even though it was her first, but it was still good enough to round up to 4 stars--a strong debut!
This is a 2-timeline novel and I thought that Dykes did a good job of both times and they connect very well. The "present day" one is actually set 18 years before this book came out, so not old enough to also be historical fiction, but not quite contemporary, either, and this works well for the technology, etc, which fits the story. Although much of the older story is set near the end of WW II and the years following, it isn't a war story since the POV for that one had to stay behind. There is loss, grief, hope, love and many other things wrapped up in this book.
I liked the characters and was able to root for them. The writing doesn't sparkle as much as the next book, but then it's her first so that's normal.
