I'm not done yet but I agree Dean, the prose is lyrical in its description of desperate poverty. I was reminded a little bit of Joe by Larry Brown.
I should finish today. I saw the movie so I already knew how it would all turn out, but the book did fill in the details more clearly than the film did. The author's prose is gritty and really shines a spotlight on the desperate poverty of the community. I'm looking forward to reading more by Woodrell in the future. It's too bad more people didn't join in for this read. Very good book and not long at all.
