Barbara M (barbara-m) | 2605 comments I read this for the memoir tag but haven't had enough time to post my reviews. This is me, catching up again.

I like when a famous person reads their own memoir. I listened to Carol Burnett read hers and it added so much to the book. That's true of this book too. In addition, McConaughey has a very distinctive voice.

The Greenlights of the title is something McConaughey describes pretty quickly and uses throughout his story. He tells us that life has traffic lights - green light means go, you are on the right road. Yellow lights for caution of course, and red lights mean stop, this is wrong. The thing is, you have to recognize these signals and they show up in the most unusual places.

McConaughey also likes sayings on bumper stickers and he collects them or makes them up himself which are sprinkled through the book. When McConaughey reads them, he basically italicizes them with his voice. He goes back to his childhood, the youngest of his brothers, no sisters. His mom is a character and his dad is kind of a tough guy. There is a lot of his philosophy here too and he's really an interesting, and I think, moral person. I was impressed.

RachelG. I enjoyed your review. I think this sounds like a good one to add to my TBR as an audio. I also like to listen to memoirs read by the author.
