We are heading to the capital of Denmark. Thank you Meg, for putting together this month's challenge for us.
This lively capital mixes royal history, modern architecture, and culture with sustainable living and mouthwatering restaurants.
✱ The Copenhagen region was a Viking area from around 800 until 1050 AD. These fearsome seafarers explored foreign territories in Europe, Asia and even North America.
✱ The city of Copenhagen was founded in 1167 by Bishop Absalon and became capital of Denmark during the 15th century. Herring fishing brought great wealth to the city, and, under the reign of King Christian 4th in the 17th century, it grew to become the important regional capital it remains today.
✱ One of the oldest monarchies in the world resides here. Queen Margrethe l was the most powerful woman in Europe during her reign between the years of 1387-1412. By marrying the Norwegian king, Hakon Magnusson, she became sovereign not only of Denmark but Sweden and Norway as well. Today, Queen Margrethe II is the sovereign and with the death of Queen Elizabeth II of England, she is now the longest serving monarch in Europe, beginning her reign in January of 1972.
✱ Copenhagen has often been dubbed as one of the happiest cities in the world. Even though the taxes and cost of living are high, the citizens are well-cared for with free health care, free university tuition, and pensions for the elderly. There is a pretty high level of safety, and trust in one another, as well as the government and business, is a value that is upheld.

The city boasts several outstanding castles and palaces. At Amalienborg Palace in the heart of Copenhagen, you can visit the seat of the country's monarchy. The rooms of Christian IX, Queen Louise, and their descendants are still intact, with each room reflecting its time period. An added attraction is the Changing of the Guards, known as The Royal Life Guard, in the palace square. Christiansborg Palace was once home to kings and queens; it now houses top government offices. Gilded salons and state rooms are still used for royal events and are open to visitors. The Great Hall houses an impressive collection of tapestries. Castles to visit include Kronborg Castle with its rich history. It is world-famous as the setting for Shakespeare’s play Hamlet and is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Also not to be missed: Rosenborg Castle, built by King Christian IV in the 17th century. The beautiful castle features 400 years of royal treasures, as well as the Crown Jewels and Royal Regalia.

2. Tivoli Gardens
A trip to Copenhagen is incomplete without time spent at the world-famous Tivoli Gardens. It was founded in 1843 and has become a national treasure. Fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen and Walt Disney have found inspiration here with its exotic architecture, historic buildings, and lush gardens. There are rides, too, for every taste, from the moderate to the thrilling. The oldest and most popular is the wooden Rollercoaster from 1914. Then there is Vertigo, which will turn you upside down at 100 km/h; this one was voted Europe’s Best Ride in 2014. After all the excitement, prepare to feast on wide variety of food choices, from traditonal Danish cuisine to French bistro, gourmet burgers and seafood, at the broad selection of restaurants, or at the Tivoli Food Hall with its international offerings. The National Aquarium Denmark has a whirlpool-inspired architecture with five distinctive sections, representing a vast array of species and habitats. View the bird colonies on the steep fells of the Faroe Islands, the playful sea otters from Alaska, and the elusive Giant Pacific octopus. In warmer waters, you can view colorful fish from the coral reef, creatures from the lakes and rivers of Africa, and the crown jewel of the aquarium: the beautiful Ocean Tank with its underwater tunnel. Outdoor areas such as The Wild Waterhole, the Water Playground, and the Tropical Rainforest offer more excitement, with a chance to learn more about both local and exotic fauna and flora.

4. The Open Air Museum and The Cisternerne
While the city boasts of numerous excellent museums, two of the most unusual are the Open Air Museum and the Cisternerne. The former is spread across 86 acres of land and highlights more than 50 farms, mills, and houses from the period of 1650-1940, giving you a chance to step back into Denmark's past. It is an interactive experience located just 40 minutes outside city limits. Along with events and productions, there is an intriguing murder mystery from 1865 that visitors get a chance to solve (a perfect activity for mystery readers!). The Cisternerne, or Cisterns, provide a different experience as it is a massive underground world of caverns reached via cold concrete steps. In this moist enclave you'll find exciting contemporary art exhibits. Artists have often incorporated hanging lanterns, mirrors, fire and the like in their exhibitions. Climate change-focused works even have their own special space.

5. The Little Mermaid
There are so many worthy places to cover in this lively city, from churches to its neighborhoods and more, but no tour of Copenhagen is complete without a visit to The Little Mermaid. This iconic sculpture was a gift from Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen, and is made from bronze and granite. It sits on a rock in the water at Langelinie Pier. She was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale about the mermaid who gave up everything in her underwater world to be with a young human prince she loved. The brewer was so enchanted by the story, which he saw via a ballet performance, that he commissioned the statue. Unaccountably it has been vandalized a handful of times over the years, but it has been lovingly restored each time and returned to its perch overlooking the harbor.

6. Green Movement and Sustainability
Copenhagen has a serious investment in green living. Buying organic produce is not considered a luxury, and organic food sales make up roughly a quarter of total food sales. Bicycles are encouraged as a way to get around town. There are even eco-friendly boats for touring the city's canals. GoBoat, for example, has environmentally-friendly electric engines that are recharged by solar panels. And, unsurprisingly, sustainable hotels are actually easier to find than a non-sustainable one, as the majority of the city’s hotel rooms hold an official eco-certification.
A hidden attraction that echoes this movement is BaneGaarden, set in nine old wooden barns that are being completely restored in a sustainable manner. Here you will find a farmers market, refreshing green mandarin lemonade, and various hands-on workshops and activities.
