RachelG. I found this book to be scary. I first started reading it before bed and realized that was not the way to go. The writing really keeps the pace moving and it touches on so many emotions, especially fear, grief and anger.

I didn't realize how strong the parent/child relationship theme would be in the story I think it adds to making it frightening for me. When your child is acting different than normal and perhaps has mental illness it is terrifying to try and figure out what is wrong and how to help. Regan is only 11 when she changes from a sweet girl to a foul mouth girl who does really bizarre things and her mom is trying everything she can to help Regan.

Parts of the book are very grotesque and definitely tons of triggers, like rape. For that reason I struggle to say I enjoyed the book. I am glad I went out of my comfort zone to read it but am also happy to go back to reading books that are less intense.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8537 comments I read this when it was a relatively new book. I had just graduated college so summer of 1972. Read it in one sitting. Staying up WAY too late ... I was afraid to go to bed.

My roommate worked at a bar as a cocktail waitress on the weekends, so she wouldn't be home until about 3:00 a. I made our dog (who was not usually allowed in the living room) sit at my feet all night as I read. If I got up to go to the bathroom, the dog had to come with me. If the dog went to the kitchen to get a drink of water, I went with him. When Rosemary got home EVERY light in the apartment was on! As I recall I finished it about 30 minutes after she got home and was finally able to go to bed.

Just scared the beejesus out of me!

Booknblues | 12501 comments I wouldn't read that book now. Too scary for me. I read it after I saw the movie back in the 70s.

So scary! You are brave.

RachelG. I will be honest, I did have some trouble sleeping last night. Demons and possession are much more scary to me than ghosts!

Meli (melihooker) | 4165 comments I am a horror fan and I love the movie, so I have this high on must-read list.

Based on your review, I think I will really like it.

Lyn (lynm) | 1179 comments I read this book back in the mid 70s. It was loaned to me by my boss at the time. I returned it to him the next day, and begged for understanding because I stayed up all night and read the book. I had to. It wouldn't let me put it down. I did not sleep at all that night, and probably not for a few more nights after that. I never did see the movie, the book scared me enough, I couldn't bring myself to see it.
