Adventure ContinuedDay 6: Yucatán Peninsula

Most of the ancient sites we have visited are located in the Yucatán Peninsula. This is not surprising since it was one of the most prosperous regions of the Mayan Empire. So if you are short on time and need to limit your visit to Mexico, this is the region you should definitely focus on! It provides the best combination of culture (ancient ruins) with pleasure (beaches). Another curiosity of the area: the meteorite that is believed to have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs landed here, although the crater is now largely invisible.
*Read a book tagged TRAVEL on its GR homepage OR read a book set in a location that starts with a letter in YUCATAN (tell us where).

The starting point for most excursions in the Yucatán is usually the city of Cancún.
Until 1970, this area was an unknown desert island, when it was then decided to develop it for tourism. Now it is, together with the nearby Playa del Carmen, one of the major tourist destinations in the country and is widely renowned for its beach-side resorts. To the south lies the so-called Mayan Riviera, characterized by white sandy beaches and the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean Sea.
*Read a book where the plot is developed in an unexpected way (your interpretation) OR read a book with a title that begins with a letter in CANCUN (ignore A, AN and THE).
Day 7: Guadalajara

Mexico is home to several colonial cities that are worth a visit, so let's head back north to explore Guadalajara. The city's historic center is dotted with colonial plazas and landmarks such as the neoclassical performing arts building, Teatro Degollado. It is also home to the Hospicio Cabañas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was one of the oldest and largest hospital/orphanage complexes in Spanish America. It opened it doors in 1805 and remained in operation until 1980. Today is serves as a cultural institute and museum. Guadalajara truly values culture and hosts two well-known annual festivals, the Guadalajara International Film Festival and the International Book Fair.
*Read a book with an MC who works in the medical field (tell us how) OR read a book with one of the following numbers in the total page count: 1, 8, 0, or 5 (share page count).

Guadalajara is also famous for two other things: mariachis and tequila. The mariachis are typical musical groups of western Mexico. The number of their components varies, but there must be at least two violins, two trumpets and three different stringed instruments similar to the guitar. Mariachi groups from all over the world come to Guadalajara every year to compete and give concerts. The Jalisco state that Guadalajara is capital of is the birthplace of tequila, an alcohol made from the fermentation and distillation of the blue agave plant. It owes its name to a small city about an hour north of the capital, where it was initially produced in the 16th century. The region is now home to over 150 registered distilleries that produce 100% of the world's tequila. The area's vibrant blue agave fields have been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site and have created a culture that runs deep.
*Read a book with a plot that features music (tell us how) OR read a book where the MC drinks an alcoholic beverage (tell us what).
Day 8: Pacific Coast

For years, the Pacific coast of Mexico has been known all over the world as a vacation destination with world-class beaches. One of the most famous places is undoubtedly Acapulco, and during its heyday in the mid-20th century, the "Pearl of the Pacific" attracted the jet set for its high energy nightlife. Unfortunately, Acapulco's glorious reputation became tarnished as the city succumbed to overcrowding, pollution and drug trafficking, and many tourists are now choosing alternative locales. Though we can't mention Acapulco without sharing one of its most famous attractions: watching professionals diving from the great heights of its iconic La Quebrada cliff. Please don't try to imitate them!
*Read a book set in a location overlooking the Pacific Ocean (tell us where) OR read a book where the MC finds themselves in a dangerous situation (tell us briefly what happens).

On the coast there are other well-known localities. Italians lean toward Puerto Escondido because of the Italian book and film of the same name. It is also known for its large waves and hosts an annual surfing competition famous among surfers globally. Puerto Vallarta is often the choice among North Americans. Its charming cobblestone city center is the essence of Mexican culture, gastronomy and traditions. Whichever locale you choose, it is guaranteed that if you are looking for a beach to relax on, you will undoubtedly find one that's right for you.
*Read a book with a beach on the cover (post the cover) OR read a book where the MC takes a vacation (tell us where).
Day 9: Baja California

The Baja California peninsula stretches for approximately 1250 km (775 mi) in the northern part of the country, and is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and the east by the Gulf of California, also known as the Sea of Cortéz. A mountain range, divided into several Sierras, crosses it in its entirety, and some parts of the hinterland are characterized by a desert terrain. Many tourists travel along the Transpeninsular Highway, which takes them past the variety of landscapes, moving from one location to another to see the various attractions. In particular, it is possible to admire various examples of rock art. Those of the Sierra de San Francisco mountain range are quite impressive and have been a UNESCO site since 1993.
*Read a book in which the characters take a trip by car (tell us where they go) OR read a book whose title has changed for any reason (tell us both titles).

One of the most popular activities to do along Baja California is whale watching, particularly between December and April when gray whales migrate, although other types of whales also visit the area throughout the year. In 1993, El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve, located in the central part of the peninsula, was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site for the protection it offered to various marine mammals. Another protected area where it is possible to admire marine fauna, is the Bahia de Loreto National Park. The bravest will be able to dive to meet the different sharks that are found in these waters seasonally.
*Read a book set between December and April (tell us when) OR read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in EL VIZCAINO BIOSPHERE RESERVE (three word minimum).
Day 10: Baja California: Cabo San Lucas

Among the many cities and towns that rise along the coast, the most famous is perhaps Cabo San Lucas, which is located at the southern end of the peninsula. It is a major tourist destination not only for its beaches, but also for the beautiful natural attractions that surround it. Sport fishing is a particularly popular activity in the area. In fact, every October the most famous marlin fishing competition in the world is held here.
*Read a book published in October (share publication date) OR read a book whose author's first and last initial can be found in CABO SAN LUCAS.

In 1973 the Cabo San Lucas Flora and Fauna Protection Area was created, and became a UNESCO Natural Heritage in 2005. It includes a group of islands and some areas of the Gulf of California, as well as a large marine area. The natural arch symbol of the city of Cabo San Lucas is located in this protected area. Boat excursions to see the arch up close are available and include viewing a colony of sea lions, a pink sand beach, and other points of naturalistic interest. It also gives you the opportunity to snorkel where the waters are calm and full of colorful fish.
*Read a book set on an island (tell us where) OR read a book with a tag on its GR Homepage that is related to nature (share tag)

Let's explore the fascinating country of Mexico with a new challenge from Patrizia!
Mexico is known for its pre-Columbian monuments, palm-fringed beaches and spicy cuisine. However, as of late, traveling to many parts of this country has become risky due to high crime and violent drug lord activity. But since we travel comfortably from our home, we can virtually admire all its beauties, hoping one day to safely travel there in person.
Choose a level:
Daytripper: Complete one task per day for a total of 10 tasks.
Explorer: Complete 15 of the 20 tasks. You must complete at least one task per day.

Day 1: Mexico City
México is the word the Aztecs used to indicate their capital, so it is fitting that the current capital of this nation is called Mexico City. The city was founded in 1325, and since 1521 it has been the administrative center of the Spanish Empire in America for three centuries. Today it is a huge city, with more than a tenth of the entire population of Mexico living there! It appears to be the second largest urban agglomeration in the world after Tokyo.
*Read a book set in a big city (tell us where) OR read a book with a Spanish speaking character (tell us who).
In such a big city there is so much to see: check out the Wanderlust Capital Challenge that was dedicated to it years ago. But I want to take you to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. In reality, the current building is not very interesting due to its modernity. It was inaugurated in 1976 next to the original basilica, which was sinking into the ground due to its weight. The particular interest in this monument is that it is the main Catholic place of worship in all of Latin America and, more generally, it is the most visited Marian shrine by pilgrims in the world.
*Read a book where religion is important to the plot (briefly tell us why) OR read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in BASILICA OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE (three word minimum).
Day 2: Mexico City
In a city of over 150 museums, you cannot fail to find at least one that will interest you! However, one you definitely need to visit is the National Museum of Anthropology because it offers you an accurate view of pre-Columbian civilizations thanks to the many artifacts preserved here. The current building was inaugurated in 1964 and it's almost a small town in itself, with its many large rooms and outdoor areas. In practice, you can easily spend a full day here, alternating a visit with moments of rest in its beautiful gardens.
*Read a book where a famous museum is mentioned (share text) OR read a book with more than 150 pages (share page count).
After visiting the museum, you cannot miss an excursion to nearby Teotihuacán. Founded around 100 BC, it knew its period of maximum splendor between 150 and 450 AD. Its decline was probably due to a long period of drought. This complete pre-Columbian city became an UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987 and is best known for its imposing pyramids. It is possible to climb them, but you must be careful because the ascent (and descent) is very steep, and therefore a bit dangerous.
*Read a book with a pyramidal object on the cover (post cover) OR read a book whose author's first and last initial can be found in TEOTIHUACAN.
Day 3: Palenque
We head south to Chiapas to explore the Mayan archaeological site of Palenque. In comparison to other sites in the country, it is on a smaller scale, but it boasts some of the most beautiful Mayan works of architecture and sculpture produced. So much so, that in 1987 it was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. At the moment, it is believed that only 10% of the surface of this ancient city has been explored, with the rest still being covered by dense vegetation. Palenque was believed to be founded around 100 BC, and became an important Mayan center between the 5th and 9th centuries, until Spanish colonizers arrived. Its current name, which means fortress, is attributed to the Dominican friar who first described the site in 1567.
*Read a series book #5 or #9 OR read a book with a title that begins with a letter in PALENQUE (ignore A, AN and THE).
Since the end of the 18th century, Palenque has been the subject of several excavations that have brought to light many temples, the so-called "palace" complex, and the aqueduct. Especially intriguing, and popular with tourists, are the two parallel platforms believed to be used in a mysterious ball game, of which re-enactments are held today. Although no one truly knows how this Mesoamerican ball game was actually played, it is believed to be connected to a religious ritual and ended with a human sacrifice. Larger ball "courts" and pictorial images of the game have been found at many other pre-Columbian sites.
*Read a book where the characters watch or participate in a game (tell us what kind) OR read a book with a title that includes all the letters found in BALL (any order).
Day 4: Chichén Itzá
Chichén Itzá was one of the most important Mayan cities at the height of its splendor between the 6th and 11th centuries. It has been a UNESCO site since 1988, and in 2007, it was named one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. Its name is a Mayan term for “at the mouth of the well of the Itza,” with "Itza" referring to a very important ethnic group of Mayans in the north of Yucatán. The city was built near two large and deep natural wells, called cenotes. In addition to being a source of water, they were used in religious rituals. Exploration of these wells have found both religious artifacts and the remains of humans who were presumably sacrificed.
*Read a book published between 1988 and 2007 (share publication date) OR read a book with an MC whose first name starts with a letter in CENOTES.
Chichén Itzá is the second most visited archaeological site in Mexico. It is dominated by the imposing Temple of Kukulkan, known as El Castillo (the Castle). At sunrise and sunset during the two equinoxes, the corners of this temple casts a shadow along the northern staircase in the shape of a feathered serpent known are Kulkulkan in the ancient Mayan language. This feathered serpent was very important in the mythology of pre-Hispanic populations. In 1930, an excavation campaign discovered that this temple had been built on top of a pre-existing temple, in which the so-called "Throne of the Jaguar" was found. This symbol of power was painted red, while the eyes and spots are made of pieces of jade.
*Read a book with a shadow on the cover (post cover) OR read a book with a serpent, throne or jaguar mentioned in the text (share text).
Day 5: Tulum
Tulum was the first Mayan city sighted by the Conquistadors in 1517. This was because of its location on the coast, which made the city an important trading post where honey, salt, fish, obsidian and the feathers of quetzal (a bird with very showy plumage), were traded. Today, the city is popular with tourists, both for the well preserved ruins of this ancient Mayan port city and for the beautiful nearby beaches of fine sand. So much so, that many end their visit with a dip in the Caribbean Sea.
*Read a book where a market is visited or a trade of goods takes place (briefly share details) OR read a book where the MC goes swimming (tell us where).
Near Tulum is the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, which means "Gate of Paradise". This national park was created in 1986 and was named an UNESCO site the following year. The interior portion of the park is home to a mangrove forest, several cenotes, and numerous ruins dating back to the Mayan era. The rest of the protected area is on the Caribbean Sea and includes a coral reef that is the second largest in the world after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. There is no doubt that this park is worth a visit.
*Read a book set in a national park or reserve (tell us where) OR read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in SIAN KA'AN BIOSPHERE RESERVE (three word minimum).
