What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

Help, can't remember the title or author of a book about a Captain and his men, escaping the destruction of their home in ancient Greece by an earthquake, they wander through ancient Mediterranean ports (they stop in Ancient Egypt but they don't stay) they keep sailing looking for a new hom. They land on the coast of now Italy. Met by a tribe of mostly women, all of their men have been killed by a neighboring gang. Captain agrees to marry Chief's daughter and protect their new home. Story of their relationship. End of the book is the founding of the twin city states of Roma.

When did you read this, approximately? Is this mass fiction for an adult audience, a YA novel, or for children?

Sounds like the captain is Aeneas, and the chief's daughter is Lavinia. Have you tried using those names to search for your book?
