Barbara M (barbara-m) | 2605 comments I didn't love it, but it is memorable. In this audiobook, Toni Morrison reads. She has a slow cadence and is probably the perfect voice for this novel but it wasn't a favorite for me.

The story of Sethe is harsh and unraveled slowly to reveal a horrible event in her life. She escaped slavery, sending her sons and young daughter on ahead so she could wait for her husband, but he never showed up. She was pregnant at the time with another child. When she makes it to Ohio, she lives in the house of her mother-in-law, Baby Suggs. It is an unusual circumstance, first for Sethe to be able to marry and bear children only with her husband. Second, her husband, with permission from the farm owner, worked outside the farm on his own time to earn money to buy his mother out of slavery. That's who Sethe lives with. But there is also a ghost in the house, the ghost of her older daughter who was very young when she died under circumstances we learn later in the book. The child she was pregnant with also lives in the house, her sons have left together with no intention to return. However, a mysterious young woman shows up after Baby Suggs dies. She said her name is Beloved, which is the word carved into the headstone Sethe bought for her dead daughter. Is this the ghost now reincarnated?

There was constant tension and loss. Much of it was depressing for a very good reason. There was love, certainly, but terrible actions often in the name of love. It was a hard life and not an easy read.
