Is it possibly The Boyfriend List? The Boyfriend List: 15 Guys, 11 Shrink Appointments, 4 Ceramic Frogs and Me, Ruby Oliver
I'm not sure this is right, but I also have a memory of a book like this.
Do you have any other details? There are quite a few middle grade books with this storyline. Do you remember any character names? Anything about the cover? Did the main character have a love interest? What were the main character’s interests? Was losing a friend the main plot, or a side plot? Do you remember any other plot points?
Hmm, I wish I knew more details! All I remember is the cover was definitely animated. The main characters in the first book ride a bus and the antagonist (ex best friend) isn’t nice to the protagonist at the bus stop right after summer vacation.

This book was definitely a chapter book maybe a max of 150-200 pages as it was a skinnier book made for around 3rd-5th graders.
