√9. Weird Fact: Two Peninsulas
Michigan consists of two separate peninsulas surrounded by four of the Great Lakes. The Mackinac Suspension Bridge, completed in 1957, is the only connection between the two areas. Some maps have completely omitted Michigan's cherished Upper Peninsula or erroneously identified it as part of Wisconsin or Canada. In the 1970's there was a movement to make the Upper Peninsula a separate state called “Superior.”
