2024 Prize Calendar
Hope this is helpful. I'll try to update this throughout the year, as able. As with last year's list, I'm happy to add prizes or dates, provided you tell me which dates to plug in.

The Folio Prize has been renamed The Writers Prize and shortlist is out 9 January. I have put more details on the other thread but this prize is now like an author’s version of the Mookse and Gripes Book of The Year.
Dublin Literary Award Longlist will be announced Tuesday 16th of January
Shortlist will be announced Tuesday 26th of March
Winner will be announced Thursday 23rd of May
Might be worth considering The Victorian Premier's Literary Award, a major Australian prize, I recently read one of this year's shortlisted titles But the Girl, the list also features Jen Craig's Wall. Looking at their promo material I realise also really liked last year's winner Jessica Au's Cold Enough for Snow and other titles from previous years.https://www.wheelercentre.com/victori...
Alwynne wrote: "Might be worth considering The Victorian Premier's Literary Award, a major Australian prize, I recently read one of this year's shortlisted titles But the Girl, the list also featur..."Great to see Wall on the list - Jen Craig is in my view one of the top 2-3 writers in the English language
How have I not heard of Jen Craig? All 5 star reviews except for the few 1 star which says that reader didn’t get the book. Is Wall her best so far?
If you haven’t heard of Jen Craig then you don’t follow that Paul Fulcher chap on Goodreads (albeit i can’t blame you). Actually I like Panthers best.
I do follow Paul Fulcher, we like many of the same books, but somehow I’ve missed mention of Jen Craig.
How does Vehicle rank among her books? My husband was supposed to buy me Praiseworthy the other day when he went to the bookshop, but he got confused and bought Vehicle instead...
Robert wrote: "That’s Jen calleja 🙂"Haha I definitely did not realize those were two different writers. :-P
Great Work Dav. This is my ultimate reference.Just wanted to ask if PEN/America Prizes are announced this Saturday, January 19?
Alfaguara Prize will be announced on 25 January
International Prize for Arabic Fiction dates are:
Longlist: 14th December 2023
Shortlist: 14th February
Winner: 28th April
Thanks for the help, everyone.I haven't seen any news about the PEN/America longlist. Usually it's out in December (last year's late date was an outlier - so far).
The 2024 Youth Media Awards, given by the American Library Association, were announced this morning. There were 22 categories. Here are few that were of personal interest to me:
The Newbery Medal is given to the "author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children."
The 2024 Medal went to Dave Eggers for The Eyes and the Impossible
There are five Honor books:
Eagle Drums by Nasugraq Rainey Hopson
Elf Dog and Owl Head by M.T. Anderson
Mexikid by Pedro Marti´n
Simon Sort of Says by Erin Bow
The Many Assassinations of Samir, the Seller of Dreams by Daniel Nayeri
The Randolph Caldecott Medal goes "to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children published by an American publisher in the United States in English." this years winner:
Big by Vashti Harrison
There are several Honor books which I didn't note.
"The Michael L. Printz Award annually honors the best book written for teens, based entirely on its literary merit, each year." The 2024 winner:
The Collectors: Stories edited by A.S. King and written by M.T. Anderson, e.E. Charlton-Trujillo, A.S. King, David Levithan, Cory McCarthy, Anna-Marie McLemore, G. Neri, Jason Reynolds, Randy Ribay, and Jenny Torres Sanchez
The British Book Awards (aka Nibbies) shortlists came out on 8 March but I didn’t post as we don’t have a prize page plus it’s an odd selection:https://www.thebookseller.com/awards/...

Are they supposed to be 2023 books or does number of sales impact selection? Wondering because the Colleen Hoover came out in 2022 but know her books sell a lot.
I like to follow the Dutch 'Europese Literatuurprijs' for best European novel in translation, and the longlist was announced earlier this week. I'll let you have fun with the translation of the Dutch title (but of course happy to put links myself if there is interest). What surprises me, not necessarily in a good way, is the number of big namesEen breuk in april – Ismail Kadare, vertaald uit het Albanees door Roel Schuyt (Querido)
Een klein detail – Adania Shibli, vertaald uit het Arabisch door Djûke Poppinga (Koppernik)
Een schitterend wit – Jon Fosse, vertaald uit het Noors door Marianne Molenaar (Oevers)

I don't see a listing for one of my favorite prizes, The Baillie-Gifford Prize for nonfiction which releases their longlist 9/5/24 this year. The other dates are:Shortlist: 10/10/24
Winner: 11/19/24
Has anyone heard a date on the Giller this year? It seems very quiet.
The BG is a great prize although I must admit I normally only read 1-2 of the books. Any thoughts on what might make the list. I wonder if there will be WP overlap?

I have not really read enough. I have some I have sampled or am looking forward to. I mentioned The Rigor of Angels.
Earlier you had pointed me towards Question 7
I have liked what I sampled from The Garden Against Time: In Search of a Common Paradise by Olivia Laing. I also would like to read A Wilder Shore: The Romantic Odyssey of Fanny and Robert Louis Stevenson by Camille Peri. The Eastern Front: A History of the First World War by Nick Lloyd, I Heard There Was a Secret Chord: Music as Medicine by Daniel J. Levitin and the new book on the queen by Craig Brown. Earlier in the year I liked Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder by Salman Rushdie and Reading Genesis by Marilynne Robinson. I did not read but still thinking towards The Light Eaters: How the Unseen World of Plant Intelligence Offers a New Understanding of Life on Earth by Zoë Schlanger. I hope a couple of these make it.
David wrote: "Thanks, Sam. I added Baillie-Gifford and also put in dates for the National Book Award."Thanks David. I am still wondering about the Giller. They had a problem with author boycotts. I hope the prize is not being delayed.
Re Giller Prize, their Instagram says Sep 4 at 11:30 EDT. And a commenter says 40 authors have pulled their books from consideration.
