Parks & Tasks

North America has the largest park on the globe and we visited it in our Extreme National Parks Challenge. This #1 spot goes to Northeast Greenland National Park, which covers 972,000 sq kilometers or 375,000 sq miles. It’s hard to wrap our brain around this size, but there are only 30 NATIONS larger than this national park!

Now let's check out the largest parks on each of the other continents that come in after this one in size.

1. Asia: Sanjiangyuan National Park (123,100 sq km/47,529 sq mi)

Established in 2021, China’s Sanjiangyuan National Park is now the largest NP in Asia. Located high on the Tibetan Plateau, it nurtures the headwaters of the Yangtze, Yellow and Lantsang Rivers. In fact, the park is often referred to as Three Rivers Park. It is the kind of scenery that defies belief with an impossibly high mountain landscape, featuring crystal blue rivers weaving through beautiful green meadows, carrying the glacial meltwater to the heartlands of Asia a thousand miles below.

✱ Read a book with a mountain on the cover (post cover) OR read a book whose author’s first and last initial can be found in TIBETAN PLATEAU.

Sanjiangyuan is part of an ambitious plan to create an immense network of parks across China by 2030, with the primary objective to protect the country’s iconic, and in many cases endangered, species. The Tibetan Plateau is second only to Africa in terms of the diversity of its terrestrial megafauna. The cast of characters makes for impressive reading: brown bears, gray wolves, Tibetan foxes, Eurasian lynx, wild yak, Tibetan antelope, and plateau pika and argali, the world’s largest living sheep.

✱ Read a book with a character who works with animals (briefly share how) OR with a MC whose first name starts with a letter found in FAUNA.

There is one resident here that reigns supreme in the human imagination: the snow leopard. Sanjiangyuan is the largest uninterrupted habitat for these mammals in the world. Perfectly adapted for the region’s alpine slopes, snow leopards are true Tibetan nomads, with each individual roaming up to 1,000 km in search of prey. It is this itinerant existence that makes them so vulnerable to ecological destruction. The Snow Leopard Trust estimates that between 3,500 and 7,000 of these cats remain in the wild, with up to 60% of the population living in China. But their elusive nature makes accurate data difficult to ascertain, and these troubling statistics could be far lower.

✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in SANJIANGYUAN NATIONAL PARK (THREE Word Minimum).

2. South America: Chiribiquete National Park (43,000 sq km/17,000 sq mi)

South America’s largest parks are found in the continent’s least-populated regions: the Amazon and Patagonia regions. The reigning champ is Chiribiquete National Park in southeast Colombia. In fact, it is the largest tropical rainforest national park in the world. Crossed by the Equator, it is one of the best preserved places on Earth and protects a massive tract of rainforest, tepui flat-topped mountains, and wild rivers. It looks like something out of “Jurassic Park” and the only way to see this "lost world" is on a flight-seeing trip. That was how this incredible place was first discovered - from a plane in 1986. One of its icons to look for is the Giant Marmita, with its high rock walls and crater.

✱ Read a book with an airplane or helicopter on cover (post cover) OR read a book whose author’s first and last initial can be found in RAINFOREST.

There may not be dinosaurs here, but the place is inhabited by other apex predators, including the revered jaguar. It is one of the 82 mammal species found here. Researchers have also discovered a treasure trove of other creatures including 209 butterfly species, 238 fish species, 57 amphibian species, 60 reptile species, and over 410 bird species. Many of these are threatened and endemic to the region. The flora is equally incredible. Chiribiquete is home to 30% of the ecosystems and flora of the Colombian Amazon, and over 1,800 plant species have been discovered in the park to date.

✱ Read a book with a character who works with plants (tell us how) OR with a MC whose first name starts with a letter found in JAGUAR.

On the first real expedition into the park in 1990, incredible rock paintings were discovered. Since then, over 70,000 ancient paintings have been found, some of them rendered more than 24,000 years ago. They depict hunting scenes, battles, ceremonies, as well as fauna and flora species, with a particular emphasis on the worship of the jaguar, a symbol of power and fertility. These petroglyphs and pictographs are the main reason the park has been named an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in CHIRIBIQUETE NATIONAL PARK (THREE Word Minimum).

3. Africa: Nyerere National Park (30,893 sq km/11,927 sq mi)

Thoughts of Africa and in particular, Tanzania, bring to mind the world reknown Serengeti NP. But Tanzania's newest park now stands as the largest in Africa. The vast Nyerere is located in South-Eastern Tanzania and was carved out from the Selous Game Reserve, a 55,0000 sq km wilderness area and safari destination. It was established within the last 5 years and is named in honor of the country's founding father, the late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.

✱ Read a book with a wild animal on the cover (post cover) OR read a book whose author’s first and last initial can be found in TANZANIA.

This NP has an undisturbed ecology and can be considered more remote, pristine and unspoiled compared to more visited parks in Africa. It is home to an intact and diverse range of wildlife exhibiting significant predator and prey relationship. Good numbers of Big Cats such as lion, leopard, cheetah can be found, along with other large game animals such as elephant, rhino, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, and wildebeest. Most notably the park is known for its prolific population of African Wild Dogs. Being new and less frequented by tourists, the animals in the park have had less exposure to humans, giving you a truer picture of them in their habitat.

✱ Read a book with a character who lives in a very remote location (tell us where) OR with a MC whose first name starts with a letter found in DOGS.

The great Rufiji River, the largest river in Tanzania, is one of the major tourist attractions here. The river is a designated photographic zone, and boasts a healthy population of hippo and crocodiles, in addition to one of the largest mangrove forests in the world. A River Boat Safari that explores its channels, lagoons and swamps is a fantastic way to experience the park. For accommodations, there are several tented camps to choose from that offer safaris, nature treks, village visits, and bush meals. Tourism is expected to grow and develop as the park matures.
✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in NYERERE NATIONAL PARK (THREE Word Minimum).

4. Oceania: Munga-Thirri-Simpson Desert National Park (36,000 sq km/13,900 sq mi)

One of Australia's newest national parks is also the continent's largest. Located in the state of South Australia, it was declared a NP in 2021 to protect this starkly beautiful desert landscape from the exploitation of fossil fuel companies. Located within the driest region of the country it features the Simpson Desert, one of the world’s best examples of parallel dunal desert. The sand dunes stretch over hundreds of kilometers and lie across the corners of 3 states – South Australia, Queensland and the Northern Territory. This "big sky" landscape also features extensive playa (dry) lakes, grasslands and acacia woodlands. The park is only open to permitted visitors from April to October due to extreme temperatures.

✱ Read a book with a "big sky" landscape on the cover (post cover) OR read a book whose author’s first and last initial can be found in SAND DUNE.

Currently, there are no visitor facilities, campgrounds, or even paved roads; anyone who ventures into this park should be well-versed in wilderness survival. A 4WD vehicle is allowed, but must be equipped with high visibility safety flags. Visitors are required to stay on the main track, called the QAA Line. This track was made by surveyors searching for gas and oil between 1960 and 1970. It takes 5-6 hours to drive one way, so allow for an overnight stay. But be aware that camping is only permitted within 500 meters of the QAA Line. There are also no trails in the park and walking any distance from your vehicle is not recommended. Guided outback tours are available from several adventure companies.

✱ Read a book with a main character who exhibits wilderness survival skills (tell us how) OR with a MC whose first name starts with a letter found in OUTBACK.

This desert habitat is far from being deserted. The park is sanctuary to more than 900 species of plants and animals, including the ecologically-important animals such as Thorny Devils, Dingoes and Wedgetail Eagles. The park includes part of the Simpson Desert Important Bird Area that boasts over 180 bird species. With the falling of any significant rains, temporary wetlands are created that become breeding sites for several species of migratory birds. The rains also bring a blooming of dormant wildflowers, though witnessing this transformation is difficult with the park being inhabitable during the rainy season.

✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in MUNGA-THIRRI-SIMPSON DESERT NATIONAL PARK (THREE Word Minimum).

5. Europe: Yugyd Va National Park (19,000 sq km/7,336 sq mi)

Europe's largest national park is Yugyd Va National or "Komi" Park, located in the Komi Republic of European Russia. This park, that virtually sits on the edge of the world, was founded in 1994, primarily to preserve the endemic nature of the region. Its territory is also under UNESCO protection under the name of "Virgin Komi Forests". Situated on the western slopes of the Northern and Subpolar Urals, its landscape includes mountains, glaciers, alpine meadows, rocky buttes, river and lakes, and (of course) the unique taiga forests, which are the oldest on the continent. The park is also rich in flora and fauna, and boasts the complete absence of permanent modern human settlements.

✱ Read a book with a group of trees on the cover (post cover) OR read a book whose author’s first and last initial can be found in TAIGA FOREST.

Russia was hoping the creation of this park would give its people recreational use of the taiga forests, or snow forests, that cover more than half of its acreage. Nordic skiing through the trees is popular during the winter. The summer months are perfect for hiking and there are many incredible trails available to explore these boreal forests. Another park asset is its crystal clear and impeccable fresh water. This is reflected in its name: in the Komi language, "yugyd va" means "light or clear water". The park's numerous mountain rivers and lakes are some of the cleanest in Europe, and the water is so transparent that the bottom can be seen. The purest rivers are spawning grounds for the Pechora salmon and other valuable breeds of fish. Fishing is prohibited in the park, but other water activities such as river rafting, boating, and kayaking are available.

✱ Read a book with a character who skis, kayaks, or goes boating (briefly share details) OR with a MC whose first name starts with a letter found in CLEAR.

Visiting the park takes some preparation, and due to its remote location and high user fees, the amount of tourism here is still quite low. It is currently visited by only 4,000 tourists every year, which is much less than the park's potential recreational capacity. Park management is working on making a visit here easier. Old mining camps are being restored and there is a plan to create new hostels in the style of traditional Komi huts for 7–10 people. Now there are tent camping sites set up, as well as a few tourist bases with cabins and bathhouses, garbage bins and pit toilets. None of the accommodations have running water or electricity, so everything is back to basics. This magnificent park is a peaceful and complete escape from the real world!!

✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in YUGYD VA NATIONAL PARK (THREE Word Minimum).

Sidebar about Antarctica:
Antarctica does not have any national parks, but its only official nature reserve, the Ross Sea Marine Protected Area, beats all of the above parks in size. It spans an unbelievable 1.55 million sq km (600,000 sq mi) and is home to millions of polar animals including penguins, whales, seals and seabirds. It has been proposed that at some point in the future, the entire continent should be designated The Antarctic World Park.
