The Changing Hat Theory Give each character a unique accessory, this will make each character different. It could be a fancy hat, gloves, or a scarf. It needs to stand out from the rest. You can visualize it in your mind, draw it, or write a description of it. If you can't think of what it should look like pick an accessory you already have. Now, let's say that this hat for instance means a lot to the characters but why? It could be that a loved one gave it to them, they have had it since they were little, it is magical, or it hides something.
This will make you think outside the box.
Now I want you to imagine how the character would feel without their magical hat. And what would they do to get it back or would they try to get it back and why not? What does that say about your character/characters? Let us replace the hat with the character's inner conflict. What are they carrying around? Is it guilt, sadness, anger, regret, or something more? Take a piece of paper and draw a heart where you write what they are carrying/what their inner conflict is. What story is it they tell themselves? Think about it. What truly matters to them? Take a piece of paper and draw a new heart, this time write what fills them up, what they want, and what makes them happy.
