KateNZ | 4184 comments When August Salt returns to Saoirse Island in Puget Sound after fourteen years away, bringing his mother’s ashes home, his arrival stirs up old memories and hurts - a dead teenager, a fire that nearly destroyed the island’s main source of livelihood, abuse, suspicion and a community where the island’s own magic hovers close under the surface.

I enjoyed this for the most part - I liked the writing style, the themes and the gradual unpicking of the mystery. The switching of POV and the changing timelines got a little much at times though and there were sections in the middle where it seemed to drift, and/or to get unnecessarily hysterical - that stopped me from giving it four stars. On the good side, the magic wasn’t too dominating: it was mostly more like a strong connection to the land rather than something that could be wielded to solve a problem (with one exception). The focus was much more on the people and the mystery.
