Space Babies! Space Babies? With Nappies!? And a Space Bogeyman? Wild. There’s a lot of dialogue to introduce all the critical elements for new viewers, but this is a classic Doctor Who episode. Wonderful. Silly. Scary enough to hide behind the couch. Ncuti Gatwa has the energy of David Tennant and Matt Smith, the gravitas of Christopher Eccleston, and the joy-of-life of Jodie Whittaker. But will he have the tenacity of Peter Capaldi? I’ll have to keep watching to find out. 🙄 Of course I’m going to keep watching!

Travis (travishiltz) | 2433 comments Good, not great, but I appreciate what RTD was trying to do.
New Tardis set is beautiful, two leads are solid and have a great chemistry.
Ncuti is very slick and polished, but has the manic energy of a Doctor.
For once we cranked up the joy and turned down the angst.
Like that we aren't trying to ignore or fix the timeless child, but are using it.
Nothing more Doctor Who than an Earth colony ship in trouble, with a lurking monster.

The less than perfect:
Putting space in front of things doesn't nessicarily make them cooler.
A very wise man once said that.

I was hoping we'd lose the magical/mystery box girls when we lost Moffatt.
The pay off better be worth it.

It's trying little too hard, but I understand why, so I'll let it go.

Rick | 2281 comments I agree with your points. But I think I had a little more fun with it than you did.

Possibly.
I think as an intro episode, it does a good job.
It just also reminds you that RTD has his flaws and as much as this is a new era, it has a lot going on from the old, new era.

He's gotten much better when it comes to families. I will give him that.

Some to be admired, some more to be cringed at and really be grossed out by. The farting dust bins were bad enough, but he really went overboard with the whole booger-man thing and exploding nappy problem. 🤢

And honestly, I really couldn't buy into the whole thing about the babies. Instead of enjoying the story, I found myself wondering how they kept those kids calm while their remote controlled strollers rolled around the set without any grown ups around (or did they just green screen the humans out of the scenes?). Any road, this was not one of my favorite intros to the newest part of the series.

A lot of call backs to End of the World and other 9th Doctor stories in this episode.

Wow!
I totally forgot about the jukebox showing up before.
That's actually pretty cool.

I'm now imagining a cut scene where Nine is trying to sneak off with it.
Rose: should we be doing this? It's kind of stealing."
9th: If you're not going to push, could you hold the door open while you lecture me...?

Rick | 2281 comments I’m down with a case of the Covid-19, I’m starting to feel better, so I decided to rewatch Gatwa Season 1. This is episode is still so much fun and just so silly and delightful. I love it.

Sorry to hear you've got the unfun stuff. Hope you feel better soon!!

As for this episode? This is one I wish could be lost to the mists of time ...

I’m working on it. As for the episode? I get it. I totally do. This is one you’d willingly delete from the BBC archives? It’s beyond goofy and silly, it’s well into the theater of the absurd. But it kinda works for me. And I’m giving Gatwa all the credit for that.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2433 comments It’s a classic colony ship under siege by a monster story
Just wish there had been fewer snot and fart jokes

Was fun to see the actress who plays queen Charolette in space

Rick | 2281 comments Rewatched again. Love it. It’s so silly and fun. And I LOVE that The Doctor saves the bogeyman. Brilliant stuff.
