Ellen | 3580 comments When Mallory Greenleaf was 14-year-old, a traumatic family event caused her to give up the game of chess, a game in which she excelled. Instead she concentrated on taking care of her mother, and two younger sisters. Now 18, Mallory has bypassed college to work as a mechanic in a garage in order to earn the money needed for rent, food and her sister's needs. Her best friend convinces Mallory to play chess just one more time for a charity tournament. Mallory reluctantly agrees and ends up beating the world ranked #1 player, Nolan Sawyer. Soon after she is offered a spot in a prestigious chess academy and the possibility of much needed prize money. Keeping her new vocation secret from her family, Mallory begins to climb the ranks in the chess world. There is also the added benefit of the handsome Nolan Sawyer and the beginnings of what might be the ultimate check mate.

Well, not being a fan of romance fiction, this was pretty good. I liked the 2 main characters and the mysteries of the chess world, of which I know nothing. I think my problem with romance novels is that they always seem so formulaic to me but this one was not bad.
