NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11286 comments This WWII novel is primarily set in a traveling circus, which was a nice change for me. When Jews were forbidden to work in the industry, some circus owners managed to hide people like Ingrid, who was once a famous trapeze artist. They also took in a girl with a Jewish baby despite her lack of experience. The two women get off to a rough start, but they eventually become friends. I enjoyed the relationships. The story has some interesting turns with most of the drama towards the end. The focus is on a relatively small number of characters, rather than a large cast of unusual characters. The beginning is very much like The Nightingale, with a very old woman attending a historical event related to the circus. (We don’t know which woman it is until the end. ) Don’t expect this to be another Water for Elephants or The Nightingale.
