Jack, an affluent actor, is getting married and wants a last fling before he settles down. Protagonist Miles, a struggling writer, is his best friend. The two set off on a road trip to a wine festival in northern California. Jack and Miles have almost opposite personality types. Jack is extroverted and charming, while Miles is introverted and self-critical. Miles is still not over his ex-wife and is not overly enthused at helping Jack cheat on his fiancé. The storyline follows their outlandish and humorous escapades.
This book starts out poorly. I am not a big fan of plots that revolve around cheating, which appeared to be Jack’s main goal, so I almost abandoned it. Fortunately, it got better as it went along. It is humorous in places. Eventually the storyline developed the characters in greater depth, especially narrator Miles. I particularly liked the friendship between Miles and Jack (though I wanted to warn Jack’s fiancé to run far, far away). I read it for a group as a book related to wine. I think it may appeal to oenophiles as there is a great deal of discussion of various vintages using the appropriate jargon that I tended to gloss over. I was interested to find out how their crazy adventure would end.
