Czech. Appears to be a one=hit Wonder. Karel Poláček has this one thing, We Were a Handful, with like 728 ratings (!!!) but like no English readership.

Yep. That's it. But I'm not seeing anything in German from Poláček.

Poláček didn't write anything in German that I know of. There are some German translations, including of what is known in English as We Were a Handful (a literal translation is "There Were Five of Us."). I didn't see one of Dům na předměstí on Amazon Germany, but the Germans have translated at least part of his tetralogy.

By the way, We Were a Handful is more of a children's book, which is why it is so beloved. His other most beloved book, Muži v ofsajdu, is a soccer book (he was also a sports writer; "ofsajd" is a Czechified "offside"). What is most beloved is not necessarily what you may want to read.
