Mine aren't gruesome, but they are dystopian/dark science-fantasy. I've got a four-novel series where the main character is an AI service android facing off against a cosmic elder god bent on keeping the universe in a lie. If you like aliens, futuristic sci-fi, and a twist of dark/dystopian fantasy, check it out.
Halloway I: Unbound
Halloway II: Echoa
Halloway III: DiurNoctus
Halloway IV: Terminus
You probably will feel like throwing up with hex from Thomas olde heuvelt but it’s so worth it. Please read it. It really isn’t talked about enough!!
Aleeza wrote: "YESS I NEED SOME HORROR RECS TOO!"This is one of more 'gentle' horrors included in 'Bloodied Constellations' a horror/ fantasy collection of short fables on B&N and amazon
If you want more gore, dark, and gothic, suspense elements 'Riptide' and 'Beyond Sanity' go much harder on the elements of "Oh F****"
Sour Bites (Full story Free)
There’s a certain sound that pairs with the ripping of meat, stretching, suspended, snagged between fang and bone, a little like tearing paper, except one can hear the rubber notations of flesh. Gerdi's emphatic gurgles and contentive groans, however, consume the space in her ears. Each flavor: impeccably succulent. Obsessed with her meal, and herself, she’s completely deserted all of her victims' shiny baubles.
Choosing instead to focus on every bloody morsel, the creature stuffs another bite into her atrocious, sloppy maw. Gerdi, like most impish creatures, delights in the tenor of her own voice. She babbles around each mouthful. Decadent. Amongst her quick snorts for air and brief pauses to slurp marrow, Gerdi indulges herself in a symphony of cacophonous drivel. An obscene vapor escapes her bowls.
Spade-tipped tail swishing giddy in the air, Gerdi appears quite jovial. Sprightly indeed, considering known temperaments for demonic underlings. The sheen of her ‘not-quite-skin’ gives an impenetrable, almost stiff impression, bound over a protruding skeletal frame. Her spindly arms match the length of her entire body. Her bony, angular knees force her abnormally muscular legs into a permanent crouch. Shredded rags cover her doll-size torso from which two vein-webbed wings protrude. Her jaw juts out, comically larger than the top half of her cranium. Pointed ears quiver with every greedy bite. Her eyes are gargantuan orbs. Gerdi’s face possesses no sign of a nose, only two capacious slits.
Candied blood droplets! Greasy and tender! The sweetest of sweet meats, as always closest to the ribs, shanks, shoulder— even some fat congealing against the skull. An imp’s senses are keen. Still, Gerdi doesn’t need to hear the pattering of footfalls. She senses each one.
It’s instinctual, hunching to all fours, kicking more earth over the… (Body may not be an accurate term.) She's been peeling off flesh for several hours. The boughs above offer her a place to hide. Gerdi grouches under her breath, seeing the fat bejeweled toe poke out from the pile of dirt and slabs of shale. She snaps away some already dehydrated twigs and tosses them at the ground. The sprigs jostle through the air and settle over the protruding digit. Timely. A child sprints into the clearing.
Odd, the child smells of panic, anxiety, and… Oh. There’s an extra scent to this child. It’s sweeter. A particular pheromone signals the difference in this child, a vulnerability in its health.
“Freak!”
Ah. Two more younglings round the corner, clearly not friends. Sour smelling. Shame. Pompous and selfish is one thing, but malice leaves an after taste.
One of the sour adolescents gets their fingers hooked into the shirt collar of the first, "Losers like you don’t need to exist.”
“Your weird face creeps everyone out.”
Gerdi’s hackles rise at the next word from the sour child’s mouth. The slur is accompanied by a derogatory gesture.
It’s the foulest language accompanied by a slapping of one’s chest and an ugly slackening of the jaw. Even hell would be offended.
The sour juvenile doesn’t get to say another word.
His friend screams.
The sweet-scented child is quiet.
Silence is abrupt as a second body smacks into the ground with a thud.
Stubble peppers the sour faces. A faint snarl hisses past the gnash of Gerdi’s teeth. Not children.
Still… not quite grown.
Her gaze turns to the quiet one. Interesting. The scent of fear has dissipated. The child looks down at the bodies on the ground, then raises its eyes to meet Gerdi’s.
Gerdi offers what she hopes is an innocent and empathetic gurgle.
The child reaches into its pocket. It pulls out something wrapped in foil, offering the large rectangle to Gerdi.
The two stand facing each other, occasionally blinking, neither speaking. Gerdi accepts the child’s payment. It rests awkwardly over her narrow sized palm.
The child shrugs, glances down at the bodies one last time, then turns and meanders back the way it came.
Gerdi settles back to her partially buried collection of muscle, fat, and bone. Under a rising red moon, she breaks off the offending toe with a satisfying snap. Gerdi pops the fat digit into her mouth, chittering to herself, once more content.
After a moment she turns to her new supply. It’s not long before Gerdi returns to her indulgence of incoherent fanatical babbling around her new morsels of partially soured flesh. Spreading the melting, sugary goop over intermediate bites does wonders in combating the bitter flavor. She revels in the sound it makes, not quite akin to ripping paper…
